Alercury has a high vapor pressure at the normal cell operating conditions hence it is always found in the reaction products. Although the mercury is almost completely recovered and returned to the process, environmental problems associated with mercury, combined with the less efficient eneigy utilization compared to the modem membrane cell process, has effectively stopped the building of new mercury cell plants. Much of our information about the nature of the adsorbed gas layer comes from studies of the amount of gas adsorbed on a surface a (the surface coverage) as a function of gas pressure P at a given temperature. The o-P curves derived from these experiments are called adsorption isotherms. Adsorption isotherms are used primarily to determine thermodynamic parameters that characterize the adsorbed layer (heats of adsorption, and the entropy and heat capacity changes associated with the adsorption process) and to determine the surface area of the adsorbing solid. The latter measurement is of great technical importance because of the widespread use of porous solids of high surface area in various industrial processes. The effectiveness of participation by a porous solid in a surface reaction is often proportional to the surface area of the solid. Other properties of association colloids that have been studied include calorimetric measurements of the heat of micelle formation (about 6 kcal/mol for a nonionic species, see Ref. 188) and the effect of high pressure (which decreases the aggregation number [189], but may raise the CMC [190]). Fast relaxation methods (rapid flow mixing, pressure-jump, temperature-jump) tend to reveal two relaxation times t and f2, the interpretation of which has been subject to much disagreement—see Ref. 191. Enhanced chemical reactivity of solid surfaces are associated with these processes. The cavitational erosion generates unpassivated, highly reactive surfaces it causes short-lived high temperatures and pressures at the surface it produces surface defects and deformations it forms fines and increases the surface area of friable solid supports and it ejects material in unknown form into solution. Finally, the local turbulent flow associated with acoustic streaming improves mass transport between the liquid phase and the surface, thus increasing observed reaction rates.
