Since the 19 century US innovations are aimed at the raising middle class demand for convenience that emerged in Europe and Japan decades later such as motor vehicles, home appliances, personal computers. European innovations responded either to necessities of the working class, e.g. margarine, or to luxury demands, e.g. Mercedes motor vehicles (Franko 1976, pp. 33-36). The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is an independent federal regulatory agency created by Congress in 1972. The agency s mission is to protect the public against unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with consumer products. The CPSC has jurisdiction over 15 000 types of products used in and around the home, in schools, and in recreation. Products under the jurisdiction of CPSC include clothing, children s articles, household appliances, home furnishings, cleaners, and consumer fireworks. CPSC is directed by three Commissioners, each of whom is appointed by the President of the United States, with one of the Commissioners nominated by the President to the position of Chairman. [Pg.2885]

Appliances may be classified into three major types white goods, brown goods, and traffic appliances. White goods are primarily those products associated with laundry and refrigeration such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, ranges, refrigerators, and freezers. The name was due to the primary use of white for these products. Brown goods Include radios, television sets, furnaces, air conditioners, and home entertainment products, while traffic appliances include toasters, mixers, electric knives, fans, blenders, and other more portable items. [Pg.883]

Instead, the ICEbox provides a hardware-based solution that maps to existing practices and metaphors. As mentioned before, our metaphor is that the ICEbox is a logical door to the home network. Thus, like a physical door, the ICEbox appliance is equipped with a physical lock that enables access to its introduction and management features. A homeowner uses a key to unlock the ICEbox when he or she wants to attach a new device to the home network, and can also unlock the ICEbox when a visitor appears with a device the owner wishes to provision onto the network. In much the same way that users may leave a copy of a physical key with trusted friends, users may also leave the key to the network with associates. Likewise, users who are not concerned with additional security can simply leave the device unlocked. [Pg.205]
