As might be expected, the stability and reactivity of diazonium salts are affected by substituents as well as by the anion. The rate of coupling and the location of the azo bond are influenced by substituents on the coupling reagent. Some primary and secondary aromatic amines derived from benzene initially form A-azo compounds, which rearrange to p-aminoazo compounds in acidic media [8b, c]. Tertiary amines, on the other hand, behave normally. Preparation 2-3, while of a rather complex molecule, illustrates the simple techniques commonly used in coupling in an aqueous system. Note the presumed preferential tendency of coupling to take place predominantly in the para position. 

The reaction of carbonyl sulfide with [M(02)(PPh3)2] (where M = Pd or Pt) has resulted in the first reported examples of transition metal complexes of the monothiocarbonate anion (47 R = O-). Bidentate S—O coordination was concluded from 3IP H NMR analyses of these compounds.184 A short structural review of metal complexes of monothiocarbamate ions (47 R = N(R )R") demonstrates their varied coordination chemistry.185 In complexes of the dialkyl forms the sulfur atom is seen to have considerable mercaptide character , whereas aromatic amine derivatives demonstrate C—S and M—S partial multiple bonding.185,251 A review on the coordination chemistry of these ligands has appeared.186 Additional detail is provided in Chapter 16.4 of this volume.

Tobacco smoking, occupational exposure to certain chemical dyes, and inflammatory reactions to parasitic and other infections account for the majority of the bladder cancer cases in the world. The burden of DNA sequence alterations is expected to increase in cells exposed to mutagenic agents from these exposures, such as 4-aminobiphenyl and other aromatic amines derived from tobacco smoke and dye mixtures, or nitric oxide released during inflammatory responses. Forty to fifty percent of bladder tumors contain mutant p53 alleles, and in a number of cases two distinct, nonsilent point mutations have been found in the same tumor. 

In rats, teratogenicity was studied by testing four commercially available hair dye formulations containing 1, 2, 3 and 4% PPD and several aromatic amine derivatives among their constituents [18]. No abnormal foetal effects were noted, except with the formulation containing 2% PPD, which induced skeletal deformities [18]. 

Both MDI and TDI, being aromatic diisocyanates, yield urethane polymers that tend to yellow on prolonged exposure to sunlight, presumably due to oxidation of some terminal aromatic amine (derived from these isocyanates). MDI also possesses a methylene group that is susceptible to oxidation via a proton abstraction mechanism involving autoxidation of the aromatic urethane groups to a quinoneimide structure as proposed by Schollenberger et al. (24. 25). 

Substituted derivatives thus prepared did not overcome CAM (16a) in activity in vitro except for the aromatic amine derivatives A-181785 (50a) and A-181978 (50b) (Fig. 8).
