Thyroid-stimulating hormone can be used clinically to test thyroid function but has not found practical apphcation in the treatment of human thyroid insufficiency. Direct replacement therapy with thyroid hormone is easy and effective, owing to a simple molecular stmcture. Calcitonin. Calcitonin is available commercially from pork and salmon extracts (Calcimar, Armour) as well as by synthesis. There are two commercial solvent crystaUi2ation processes. The Emersol Process, patented in 1942 by Emery Industries, uses methanol as solvent and the Armour-Texaco Process, patented in 1948, uses acetone as solvent.
