Thyroid-stimulating hormone can be used clinically to test thyroid function but has not found practical apphcation in the treatment of human thyroid insufficiency. Direct replacement therapy with thyroid hormone is easy and effective, owing to a simple molecular stmcture. TSH has been used in the veterinary treatment of hypothyroidism, and preparations of TSH ate produced by Cooper Animal Health, Inc. and Armour Pharmaceuticals.

Calcitonin. Calcitonin is available commercially from pork and salmon extracts (Calcimar, Armour) as well as by synthesis. Preparations are bioassayed on the basis of their calcium-lowering activity in comparison to the potency of pure pork calcitonin of which ca 4 p.g is equivalent to 1 MRC unit (Medical Research Council, U.K.). For clinical use, vials containing 400 units in 4 mL are available. The recommended daily dosage is 100 units to be adrninistered subcutaneously or intramuscularly because its plasma half-life is short (4—12 min).

There are two commercial solvent crystaUi2ation processes. The Emersol Process, patented in 1942 by Emery Industries, uses methanol as solvent and the Armour-Texaco Process, patented in 1948, uses acetone as solvent. The fatty acids to be separated are dissolved in the solvent and cooled, usually in a double-pipe chiller. Internal scrapers rotating at low rpm remove the crystals from the chilled surface. The slurry is then separated by means of a rotary vacuum filter. The filter cake is sprayed with cold solvent to remove free Hquid acids, and the solvents are removed by flash evaporation and steam stripping and recovered for reuse (10). 

Whether the in.stallation of the cable is in air, a duct or in ground. This will determine the type of cable required, i.e. armoured or unarmoured.
