Fig. 12. Comparison of actual and predicted charging rates for 0.3-pm particles in a corona field of 2.65 kV/cm (141). The finite approximation theory (173) which gives the closest approach to experimental data takes into account both field charging and diffusion charging mechanisms. The curve labeled White (141) predicts charging rate based only on field charging and that marked Arendt and Kallmann (174) shows charging rate based only on diffusion. Fig. 12. Dr. Richard Walentowicz provided the EPA CD-ROM disk entitled Exposure Models Library and Integrated Model Evaluation System" with other reference material. Lester Wittenberg of the Center for Chemical Process Safety, AIChE was particularly helpful in providing a chenncal industry perspective and reference material as was Dr. Steven Arendt of JBF Associates, Inc. Drs. David Hesse of Battelle Columbus Laboratories and Vinod Mubayi of Brookhaven National Laboratory were very helpful in providing material on the chemical consequence codes. [Pg.544]

The development of electrostatic precipitators was based mostly on empirical work, and it has produced more than 1000 patents covering all aspects of electrostatic air cleaning. From the theoretical point of view, important milestones were papers published by Deutsch as well as White. These papers deal with the collection efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator. The most important early papers dealing with the electrical charging of particles are the ones published by Arendt and Kallmann, Pautheniet and Moreau-Hanot, and White. ... [Pg.1212]

A number of studies have investigated the potential of melatonin to alleviate the symptoms of jet lag. Melatonin has been found to be effective in 11 placebo-controlled studies in reducing the subjective symptoms of jet lag such as sleepiness and impaired alertness (Arendt 2005). The most severe health effects of jet lag occur following eastbound flights, since this requires a phase advancement of the biological clock. In a recent study, phase advancement after melatonin administration (using 3 mg doses just before bedtime) occurred in all 11... [Pg.293]

When the radius of an aerosol particle, r, is of the order of the mean free path, i, of gas molecules, neither the diffusion nor the kinetic theory can be considered to be strictly valid. Arendt and Kallman (1926), Lassen and Rau (1960) and Fuchs (1964) have derived attachment theories for the transition region, r, which, for very small particles, reduce to the gas kinetic theory, and, for large particles, reduce to the classical diffusion theory. The underlying assumptions of the hybrid theories are summarized by Van Pelt (1971) as follows 1. the diffusion theory applies to the transport of unattached radon progeny across an imaginary sphere of radius r + i centred on the aerosol particle and 2. kinetic theory predicts the attachment of radon progeny to the particle based on a uniform concentration of radon atoms corresponding to the concentration at a radius of r + L... [Pg.145]
