Industry-wide improvement

Filter aids are widely used in die fermentation industry to improve the efficiency of filtration. It is a pre-coated filter medium to prevent blockage or blinding of the filter by solids, which would otherwise wedge diemselves into the pores of the cloth. Filter aid can be added to the fermentation broth to increase the porosity of the cake as it formed. This is only recommended when fermentation product is extracellular. Filter aid adds to the cost of filtration. The minimum quantity needed to achieve the desired result must be established experimentally. Fermentation broths can be pretreated to improve filtration characteristics. Heating to denature proteins enhances the filterability of mycelial broths such as in penicillin production. Alternatively, electrolytes may be added to promote coagulation of colloids into larger, denser particles, which are easier to filter. The filtration process is affected by the viscosity and composition of the broth, and the cell cake.5... [Pg.173]

Plasticizers are used in the polymer industry to improve flexibility, workability, and general handling properties. Dibutyl sebacate and phthalates, such as dibutyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, butylbenzyl phthalate, and diphenyl-2-ethylhexyl phosphate, serve widely as plasticizers in vinylidene chloride copolymers, nitrocellulose-coated regenerated cellulose film, and cellulose acetate (Castle et ah, 1988a). In PVC, di(2-ethylhexyl)... [Pg.325]

This chapter focuses on the value of critically analyzing incident information and discusses the benefits of using databases to evaluate lessons learned. The power of both internal databases and industry-wide incident databases can help organizations improve their performance in process safety and environmental responsibility. [Pg.9]

There have been a number of formulation approaches explored and widely practiced in the pharmaceutical industry to improve delivery of poorly water-soluble compounds especially in development of immediate release dosage forms. These delivery approaches are based on various techniques described as following ... [Pg.615]

A dead layer usually exists on the surface of phosphor particles, which degrades the phosphors due to crystal defects, residues, oxidation, contamination, etc. A surface treatment with an acid wash is widely used in industry to improve the quality of oxide and sulfide phosphors. Chemical etching on phosphors can also be used to investigate the microstructure properties of the phosphor particles. " ... [Pg.712]

Physicians report that they participate in clinical research mostly because it is scientifically rewarding, but they are also attracted to the financial rewards and the opportunities to improve patient care (Lamberti, 2005). With clinical trials numbering in the tens of thousands, there is industry-wide concern that there may be a 15% shortfall in the number of qualified US investigators in the next few years (Zisson, 2001). There are several factors contributing to this dilemma. [Pg.129]

As clinical trial protocols increase in complexity, there is an industry-wide shift toward adoption of electronic solutions to improve critical functions, most notably the collection, handling, analysis and storing of clinical data and the reporting of adverse and serious adverse events. [Pg.132]

Supplier involvement there is a statement that BOC encourages suppliers to be safe and environmentally responsible. The company has a stated strategy of working through industry trade associations to improve industry wide standards. [Pg.162]

Molecular distillation is widely used in the laboratory for analytical work, as well as in the chemical industry for improvement of flavours and fragrance, pharmaceuticals and edible products e.g. distilling vitamin A esters from dog-fish liver and shark liver oils. [Pg.44]
