This procedure can be adjusted for other volumes or concentrations, accordingly. Your goal is to determine how various metal ions affect HQS luminescence. Consider interesting comparisons of different metal ions that may commonly be found together in biolo-gical/medical applications, in the environment or in industrial settings. Different groups of techniques are given, ranging from well defined, fully validated chemical methods that both qualify and quantify the compound of interest, via screening methods that offer only semi-quantitative and semi-qualitative results, to BEWS, where there is no identification of the compound and the signal is only semi-quantitative. Each level requires a different approach for validation. A validation should be carried out under controlled conditions as well as in the monitoring practice in the field. Only too often, monitoring equipment, not only BEWS, works well in the laboratory, but fails in routine application in the environment. 

Pheromone communication in aquatic animals exemplifies their adaptation to the demands and possibilities of their environment. However, many dimensions of pheromone communication have not been explored. For example, little is known about the effect of pheromone compounds on sympatric species inhabiting the same environment (Olsen 1999 Fine et al. 2004). Therefore, the side effects of pheromone use should be evaluated before its application in the environment. The potential impacts of xenobiotics or environmental pollution on pheromone production and sensitivity should be considered as well (see Olsen, Chap. 26). 

Swimming Pool Roof Collapse In 1985,12 people were killed when the concrete roof of a swimming pool collapsed after only 13 years of use. The roof was supported by stainless steel rods in tension, which failed because of SCC. There have been other incidents associated with the use of stainless steel in safety critical load bearing applications in the environment created by modern indoor swimming pools... 

Our discussion of radionuclide techniques associated with environmental-pollution studies will be restricted to pesticide studies of an ecological nature. We have decided to emphasize pesticides because their application in the environment has been of significant concern to ecologists for many years. Readers interested in other environmental pollutants are referred to the references cited above. 

The currently available standards provide an analysis scheme and limit values for a general acceptance of biodegradable materials, which are intended for waste utilisation.
