One volume is devoted exclusively to ha2ardous chemicals, but most other volumes have some coverage of material ha2ards, use of materials in fine prevention or extinguishing, ha2ards in chemical processing, etc. More than 200 standards are described. 

Other volume-explicit equations of state are sometimes required, such as the compressibility equation V = zRT/P or the truncated virial equation V= (1 -i- B P)RT/P. The quantities z a.ndB are not constants, so some land of averaging will be required. More accurate equations of state are even more difficult to use but are not often justified for kinetic work. 

This volume contains 50 articles describing analytical techniques for the characterization of solid materials, with emphasis on surfaces, interfaces, thin films, and microanalytical approaches. It is part of the Materials Characterization Series, copublished by Butterworth-Heinemann and Manning. This volume can serve as a stand-alone reference as well as a companion to the other volumes in the Series which deal with individual materials classes. Though authored by professional characterization experts the articles are written to be easily accessible to the materials user, the process engineer, the manager, the student—in short to all those who are not (and probably don t intend to be) experts but who need to understand the potential applications of the techniques to materials problems. Too often, technique descriptions are written for the technique specialist. 

These test procedures and standards are subject to change, so it is essential to keep up to date if one has to comply with them. It may be possible to obtain the latest issue on a specific test (such as a simple tensile test or a molecular weight test) by contacting the organization that issued it. For example, the ASTM issues new annual standards that include all changes. Their Annual Books of ASTM Standards contain more than seven thousand standards published in sixty-six volumes that include different materials and products. There are four volumes specifically on plastics 08.01-Plastics 1 08.02-Plastics 11 08.03-Plastics III, and 08.04-Plastic Pipe and Building Products. Other volumes include information on plastics and RPs. The complete ASTM index are listed under different categories for the different products, types of tests (by environment, chemical resistance, etc.), statistical analyses of different test data, and so on (56,128,129).

Ammonium nitrate is made by the neutralisation of nitric acid with ammonia. The details of these processes are given in other volumes of this series. For particular application in explosives, ammonium nitrate is required in specialised forms, of which the following two are the most important.

Thus for the first volume in this series we have performed a selection of oxidation and reduction reactions, arguably some of the most important transformations of these two types, mainly employing non-natural catalysts. In other volumes of this work other catalysts for oxidation and reduction will be featured and, of equal importance, the use of preferred catalysts for carbon-carbon bond formation will be described. In the first phase, therefore, this series will seek to explore the pros and cons of using many, if not most, well-documented catalysts and we will endeavour to report our findings in a nonpartisan manner.

If we apply another restriction, p=const., in addition to porosity, all other volume-related characteristics, such as (5, specific pore volume, Fpore, etc. become independent of scaling. Indeed, if the space is isotropic the unit volume is directly proportional to the unit mass. Scaling results in change of sizes and surface areas, but the volume related to the mass remains the same. 

DR. THOMAS For a solute the meaningful thing is the degree of contact with the aqueous phase. In a small micelle the solute is close to or on the surface, and it is in contact with the water. In a larger microemulsion the molecule is in the oil, the other volume. However, depending on the solute, it may penetrate further into the micelle and you can then talk of the water or lipid side of the surface. We can control the location by use of a co-surfactant [Thomas, J. K. Chem. Rev., op. cit.]. 

Details of the current restructuring of this Chemical Engineering Series, coinciding with the publication of the Fourth Edition of Volumes 1 and 2 and to be followed by new editions of the other volumes, have been set out in the Preface to the Fourth Edition of Volume 1. The revision involves the inclusion in Volume 1 of material on non-Newtonian flow (previously in Volume 3) and the transference from Volume 2 to Volume 1 of Pneumatic and Hydraulic Conveying and Liquid Mixing. In addition, Volume 6, written by Mr. R. K. Sinnott, which first appeared in 1983, nearly thirty years after the first volumes, acquires some of the design-orientated material from Volume 2, particularly that related to the hydraulics of packed and plate columns.
