Currently applications of MABs fall within four main areas diagnosis, imaging, therapy, and purification. The primary focus is on human health care, but there have been many MABs generated for veterinary applications as well as nonmedical applications, such as environmental monitoring, and industrial processes, such as abzymes. [Pg.64]

The present review indicates that while pectin products continue to serve as a well-established food additive for technological purposes, the application of pectins for health benefits has many potential opportunities. In the last few decades, considerable research has been done on the physiological effects of pectin in humans as a water-soluble dietary fiber supplement. Some novel pharmacological activities of pectins and pectic polysaccharides are gaining more attention. Although most natural pectins from fruits and vegetables have not been shown to have these activities, chemical and enzymatic modifications may provide useful tools for producing such products for human health care. [Pg.295]

As the annual world production of food protein from plants accounted for 250 million tons in 1990 [29], a huge surplus generated in biofuel plants could be further used for the production of chemicals. Proteins from plants can be directly used in animal and human nutrition, cosmetics, and health care products as well as adhesives, coatings, and further special applications [30, 31],... [Pg.98]

Chemical substances have become an essential part of human activities. Proper use of chemical substances help human society protect itself from hunger, thirst, famine, disease, and infection with good grains, fruits, and vegetables. Synthesis, formulations, and proper use of newer drugs and pharmaceuticals have offered the benefits of improved health care to society. In short, proper and judicious application of a variety of chemical substances has improved the quality of life. In contrast, improper use or misuse of chemical substances has resulted in health disorders and fatalities. Furthermore, improper use has caused chemical disasters both at the workplace and in the environment. [Pg.303]

Human health biomonitoring using biomarkers and chemical analyses are used in the following applications (1) Health surveillance of persons who are known to have high occupational or environmental exposures to potentially toxic chemicals. This may include those who work with chemicals, radioactive materials, or biohazards as part of their occupation. Examples include factory workers, chemical industry employees, farmers, health care professionals, nuclear plant employees, and veterans of the Gulf War I. This may also consist of those who are involuntarily exposed to such hazards in their everyday surroundings. Some examples are people living near land fills, factories, hazardous waste sites, or environmental catastrophes such as the Chernobyl... [Pg.296]

Abstract Cancer is an important area of interest in the life sciences because it has been a major killer disease throughout human history. Heterocyclic molecules are well known to play a critical role in health care and pharmaceutical drug design. A number of heterocyclic compounds are available commercially as anticancer drugs. Interest in the application of structure-activity relationships has steadily increased in recent decades. Thus, development of the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model on the cytotoxicity data of heterocyclic compound series against various cancer ceU lines should be of great importance. In this chapter, an attempt has been made to collect the... [Pg.53]
