Apparent scratch

NWChem (we tested Version 3.2.1) is a program for ah initio, band-structure, molecular mechanics, and molecular dynamics calculations. The DFT band-structure capability is still under development and was not included in the Linux version tested. NWChem is unique in that it was designed from scratch for efficient parallel execution. The user agreement is more restrictive than most, apparently because the code is still under active development. At the time of this book s publication, limited support was available for users outside of the EMSL facility. [Pg.329]

Apparently there are no mild chemical reactions that can be used to transform the amide linkages in the backbone of conventional poly-(amino acids) into nonamide linkages such as ester, urethane, or carbonate bonds. Consequently, it is usually not possible to simply replace the backbone amide bonds of conventional poly (amino acids) by nonamide linkages. Pseudopoly(amino acids) must therefore be prepared from scratch by suitably designed polymerization reactions. [Pg.198]

Our goal in this discussion is to present the types of structural variations that have been studied in the various classes of hallucinogens and to explain how these changes affect biologic activity. Where possible, reasonable explanations for these differences are offered. Since we are just beginning to scratch the surface in our search for useful structure-activity relationships, the reader will soon note that most of the correlations are empirical, with no readily apparent biochemical or pharmacologic rationale. [Pg.56]

Localized infections If there is a cut or scratch in the skin, a localized infection with ulceration will develop within 1 to 5 days at the site where the bacteria entered the body. Swollen lymph nodes may also be apparent. Infections involving the mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, and respiratory tract will cause increased mucus production from the affected sites,... [Pg.384]

Picking his nose. Smiling. Oh God, that penetration was wet. Oh mother Urine stain on trousers. Urine on floor. Apparently has voided. Scratching his head. [Pg.88]

The quantities determined by scratch methods are scratch width b (Bierbaum, Berkovich and Vickers methods) or depth h. Care should be taken during measurement to read the true width of the scratch, denoted pure by Davidenkov, and not the apparent one labelled in Fig. 4.3.3 by... [Pg.32]

The vee is often truncated (see Fig.l(b)for example), and prominent second order irregularities are superimposed on the primary vee. Therefore, although the average inclination of the scratch flanks may be only about 10°, this value can be exceeded considerably at local perturbations. Fine folds may be present (10), apparently as a result of the crests of adjoining... [Pg.100]

A comeal abrasion is a cut or scratch on the cornea caused by rubbing eyes, contact lens, sand, dust, dirt, or for no apparent reason, resulting in pain, sensitized cornea (feels like something in eye), and photophobia. [Pg.350]

Another class of problems of which only the surface has been scratched is offered by mixed systems in which a Fischer-Tropsch type catalyst is combined with a solid acid such as a zeolite. Such systems have been used in recent attempts to produce narrower product distributions, and indeed deviations from the normal Schulz-Flory distribution have been reported (82-84). However, at the closing date of this review it was still unclear whether the results are characteristic of the running-in or of the steady-state behavior of the catalyst. In particular, the selective retention of the heavier products within the pores of the support might falsify the apparent catalyst selectivity. Only accurate mass-balancing and/or steady-state data can provide information on true product patterns unspoiled by this running-in phenomenon. [Pg.214]

Based on its apparent simplicity, scratch testing is frequently applied to estimate the cohesive and adhesion bond strengths of hydroxyapatite coatings (for example Arias et al., 2003 Zhang et al., 2006 Dudek and Adamczyk, 2013). However, the interpretation of the recorded traces is difficult as the test results are affected by scores of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters that tend to falsify the conclusion drawn. [Pg.354]

LDPE can be easily scratched by a thnmbnail, HDPE can be scratched with dif-flcnlty, and polypropylene can hardly be scratched at all. This is also related to the respective WPC. Apparently, this is why nnbrnshed polypropylene-based WPC feels more like a plastic. This property is directly related to hardness, which is the resistance of a material to deformation, indentation, scratching, and to abrasion resistance. The latter is lower for LDPE compared to that of HDPE (10-15 mg/100 cycles and 2-5 mg/100 cycles, respectively) [6]. [Pg.54]

An interesting theory of promoter action is based on the belief that interfaces are the seat of catalytic activity—the active centers.1,2 It is apparent that new boundaries will be provided and existing ones altered when one solid is incorporated with another, and the enhanced activity may reside in specific configurations produced at boundaries of the two solids. That boundaries between surfaces can be the seat of activity is supported by the fact that a decomposition or combination may be difficult to start on a solid surface consisting entirely of a single component. Overburnt lime does not hydrate readily because water does not combine except where hydration has already begun.22 Faraday found that hydrated salts do not commence to effloresce unless the surface is scratched. The action of manganese dioxide on the decomposition of potassium... [Pg.264]
