API gravity. The specific gravity of petroleum or petroleum products is often expressed in terms of degrees API on a scale defined by... 

The common technique used to measure the API gravity of a hquid sample is with a hydrometer graduated in degrees of API gravity. The hydrometer is inserted in the liquid sample and allowed to float freely. When equilibrium is reached, the API gravity may be read from the exposed portion of the hydrometer. 

Either American Petroleum Institute degrees (°API) or specific gravity provides information on the paraffinic or aromatic nature of crude. The API gravity of most crude oil falls between the range of 20°API to 45°API. 

In a more general sense, the generic term heavy oil is often applied to a petroleum that has an API gravity of less than 20 degrees and usually, but not always, a sulfur content higher than 2% by weight. In contrast to conventional crude oils, heavy oils are darker in color and may even be black.

Samples. Two straight-reduced asphalts from Romashkino-type (29° API gravity) crude petroleum, 100 penetration (SR-100) and 125 penetration (SR-125), and three air-blown asphalts of different degrees of oxidation, 100, 50, and 25 penetration (AB-100, AB-50, and AB-25) were investigated. The air-blown asphalts were derived from SR-125. The properties of the asphalts are given in Table I.
