At Su Suergin, in Sardinia, the deposits occur at the contact of the Rhsctic limestone with Permian slate. Antimony glance, accompanied by pyrites, is also found in the mica schist. Antimony glance is best suited for the treatment. For each molecule of autimony trisulphide there should be present in the solution three molecules of sodium sulphide and after the extraction is complete the concentration should not exceed 12° Baumd (or 9° to 10°, if hot). To the electrolyte should be added 3 per cent, of common salt, which not only assists the clearing of the solution by the separation of dissolved sulphide of iron, but also reduces the electrical resistance of the solution. [Pg.127]

Pliny the Elder describes stibi as a cosmetic and pharmaceutical agent used to color the eyebrows and lashes and for the treatment of eye disease. This material was principally composed of antimony glance hence stibium and the chemical symbol for antimony Sb. The action of tartar emetic was known to the ancient Romans. Basilius Valentinus, an alchemist firom the ISth century A.D., was the first to describe metallic antimony and related an anecdote that this substance was an agent to combat monks hence the name antimonachium. The classical explanation for the name is that antimony is a corruption of the Greek anthos amonos (flower of the god Jupiter) this was the name given to antimony glance. Antimonos, enemy of loneliness, is another possibility, in reference to the fact that antimony always occurs together with other elements (lead, arsenic) [4]. [Pg.228]

Antimony is a rare element Its content in the earth s crust is 0.2 g/tonne and it is the 65 most abundant element The principle mineral in ores is stibnite, antimony glance, a lead-gray sulfide Sb Sj (Figure M72). It has a brilliant metallic luster and sometimes contains gold and silver. A second mineral is uUmannite NiSbS, steel gray to black. [Pg.1021]

M72 Stibnite, antimony glance, Sb S, orthorhombic crystals, black shining, like a spear (Latin stibnium), and crystals of quartz. Collected by Kay Sund in the 200 meters level in the Baia Mare mine in Romania. [Pg.1309]

Antimony glance is synonymous with stibnite (q.v.), an antimony sulfide mineral with composition Sb2Sj. [Pg.16]
