The detection of triterpenoid compounds in extracts from Bidens pilosa may rationalize the use of this plant in traditional Egyptian medicine in the treatment of wounds and against bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract [211,212]. The chloroform extract gave 3-amyrin. Fig. (29), phytosterin B and P-sitosterol glucoside, while the petroleum ether extract afforded P-am5Tin, Fig. (29), phytosterin B, lupeol. Fig. (30), lupeol acetate, linolic acid and linolenic acid. The antimicrobial test was carried out to indicate an evident activity. 

The thiophene polyine ( )-2[5-hept-5-en-l,3-diynyl)-thien-2-yl]-ethan-1,2-diol isolated from an ethanolic extract of the underground parts of Leuzea carthamoides DC. demonstrated significant antifungal activity [247], while the dichloromethane extract of the air-dried leaves of Chrysanthemum coronarium afforded N-isobutyl-6-(2-thiophenyl)-2,4-hexadienamide. Fig. (46) [248]. Antimicrobial tests by the agar well diffusion method indicated that it has low activity against Bacillus subtilis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans, and is inactive against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli at a concentration of 20 pg/ml. 

Isojacareubin, which was found for the first time in H. japonicum, exhibited antimicrobial activity together with a new isopentenylated flavonol, salothra-nol. The antimicrobial test was carried out by the agar-well method using Staphylococus aureus. The compounds were examined as a 50% DMSO solution. The activity was expressed by the inhibitory diameter, which was measured after incubation for 18 h at 37 °C. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of isojacareubin and salothranol were 125 xg/mL [77].
