Antihistamines hydroxyzine

Yet another nonsedating zwitterionic H-1 antihistamine consists of the product from metabolism of the terminal hydroxyl of the potent antihistamine hydroxyzine terminating in hydroxymethyl instead of a carboxylic acid. This compound, cetirzine (123), can be obtained in straightforward fashion by alkylation of the monosubstituted piperazine 120 with halide 121, via the amide 122 [27]. [Pg.118]

Antihistamines. Some clinicians have prescribed the antihistamine, hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax) to treat anxiety. A typical regimen is 25 mg administered one to three times per day as needed for anxiety. The use of hydroxyzine to treat anxiety is largely driven by concern regarding the addictive potential of benzodiazepines. In reality, hydroxyzine does little to relieve anxiety other than produce drowsiness. Because other nonaddictive anxiolytics are available, we do not recommend routine use of this largely ineffective treatment. [Pg.135]

Cetirizine, the acid metabolite from oxidation of the primary alcohol of the antihistamine hydroxyzine (Fig. 37.15 and Table 37.6), is a widely used antihistamine (38).
