Anticorrosion and marine coatings

These two sectors are served by major multinational coating suppliers and also by smaller national suppliers filling niche gaps in their respective markets. The latter is particularly true in the anticorrosion market. Marine coatings split into two main areas ship and yacht paint. Worldwide distribution is the key to success in this sector, and for this reason the main market share is taken by a small number of major manufacturers with operations across Europe, Japan and the USA. 

Estimates of European and US solvent use (ktpa) in anticorrosion and marine coatings are shown in Table 8.8. A comparison of data from different sources is difficult in this case because consistent definitions of what is and is not included are not used.

Epoxy-silica hybrids are well known for their abrasion resistance and low thermal expansion due to the presence of nanostructured bi-continuous domains. Most recently they have entered the market as anticorrosion coatings in the marine held, for yachts and for large metal vessels, such as oil tankers, and in particular for cargo or ballast tanks and on hulls (Figure 4.9). 

Major polymer applications surface protective coatings (protective and decorative - automotive, metal cans, industrial flooring, anticorrosive paints), electrical/elec-tronics (printed circuit panels, conductive adhesives), composites (building/construction, marine, electrical/electronics, aircraft, communication satellites, automotive, pipes, consumer products), bonding and adhesives, flooring, tooling and casting, biosensors...
