Anticonvulsants tricyclic antidepressants

Drugs that may be affected by dexmethylphenidate or racemic methylphenidate include antihypertensive agents, pressor agents, coumarin anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and clonidine. [Pg.1149]

Special situations of sudden-onset/sudden-resolution pain, especially along a nerve track, or neuralgias, may require an adjunct of an anticonvulsant and/or tricyclic antidepressant. [Pg.631]

Drugs that might be affected by amprenavir include antiarrhythmics, anticonvulsants, azole antifungals, benzodiazepines, calcium channel blockers, cisapride, clarithromycin, cyclosporine, ergot alkaloids, fentanyl, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, indinavir, methadone, nelfinavir, oral contraceptives, pimozide, rifabutin, ritonavir, saquinavir, sildenafil, tacrolimus, trazodone, tricyclic antidepressants, warfarin, and zidovudine. [Pg.1826]

Figure 1.15 The Butterfly Angle . Tricyclic drugs consist of anticonvulsants (carbamazepine), antidepressants (amitriptyline), and antipsychotics (chlorpromazine). Although aU three families consist of three interconnected ring systems, the orientation between the rings varies, imparting a different spectrum of bioactivity. Figure 1.15 The Butterfly Angle . These drugs are most commonly classified according to their principal pharmacological effect rather than by specific chemical structure (Table 10.4). The exception to this is the tricyclic antidepressants which share a common chemical structure and also common pharmacological effects. The other important type of drug used in the treatment of mood disorders is the mood stabilisers (lithium compounds and some anticonvulsants) which are discussed in the next section of this chapter. Tricyclic antidepressants... [Pg.174]

Since local anesthetics have membrane-stabilizing effects, both parenteral (eg, intravenous lidocaine) and oral (eg, mexiletine, tocainide) formulations of local anesthetics have been used to treat patients with neuropathic pain syndromes because these syndromes are thought to involve uncontrolled, rapid, sensory fiber firing. Systemic local anesthetic drugs are commonly used as adjuvants to the combination of a tricyclic antidepressant (eg, amitriptyline) and an anticonvulsant (eg, carbamazepine) in chronic pain patients who fail to respond to the combination of antidepressant and anticonvulsant. [Pg.569]

The depressive phase of manic-depressive disorder often requires concurrent use of an antidepressant drug (see Chapter 30). Tricyclic antidepressant agents have been linked to precipitation of mania, with more rapid cycling of mood swings, although most patients do not show this effect. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are less likely to induce mania but may have limited efficacy. Bupropion has shown some promise but—like tricyclic antidepressants—may induce mania at higher doses. As shown in recent controlled trials, the anticonvulsant lamotrigine is effective for many patients with bipolar depression. For some patients, however, one of the older monoamine oxidase inhibitors may be the antidepressant of choice. Quetiapine and the combination of olanzapine and fluoxetine has been approved for use in bipolar depression. [Pg.640]

Carbamazepine (Tegretol) is closely related to the tricyclic antidepressants. In neurological medicine, its principal uses are as an anticonvulsant for partial complex seizures and in the management of tic... [Pg.213]
