Retrospectively, the tool that provided the key to identification of IgE was the preparation of polyclonal antibodies specific for IgE. Using the antibodies, reagin could be identified in vitro and IgE could eventually be isolated from the seram of atopic individuals (6). The anti-IgE antibodies were also employed to identify the first and second cases of IgE myeloma proteins (7) and to establish that IgE represents a unique immunoglobulin isotype (8). [Pg.560]

Diagnostic procedures include dark-field microscopy12, non-treponemal exams10 (i.e., the Venereal Disease Laboratory and the rapid plasma reagin test), and treponemal exams (i.e., enzyme immunoassay, the T. pallidum hemagglutination test, the fluorescent treponemal antibody test, and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). [Pg.1163]

An atopic person has reaginic antibodies directed against common environmental allergens, and since immunoglobulin E (IgE) is the most important reaginic antibody in man its measurement is relevant to both clinical allergists and immunologists. [Pg.376]

Cromoglicate inhibits mast-ceU degranulation and histamine release induced by phosphohpase A2, but does not interfere with the interaction of antigen and reaginic antibodies. Evidence is accumulating that it has an important stabilizing action on leukocytes, apart from mast cells, such as neutrophils, eosinophils, and monocytes, and that it also affects nerve reflexes in the lung (2). [Pg.1017]

Some people, however, find such reactions a great nuisance. These may be those who have an imbalance, e.g., a poor vocabulary of IgG and IgA antibodies with excessive production of IgE (K2). The object of densensitization courses of immunization in these patients is to try and increase the response in IgG antibodies which would have higher binding affinities and compete effectively to deprive IgE sites of antigen. Because IgE normally has a very low serum level (250 pg/100 ml), any increase in reaginic antibody will be readily seen as an increase in total... [Pg.236]

Fig. 6. Diagram to show how, when allergen becomes bound to mast-cell fixed reaginic antibody (IgE), the vasoactive amines mediating immediate hypersensitivity are discharged. The mast cell is capable of becoming recharged, etc. Excess IgG-antibodies can block the access of allergen, which acts only when bound to two IgE molecules. Fig. 6.
