Anti-vibration mounting

Gas boosters may be fitted with motor enclosures or designed to operate at lower rotating speeds. Alternatively, they may be housed in an acoustic enclosure within the boiler house. The booster and drive unit can be supplied with anti-vibration mountings to isolate it from the floor or steelwork and flexible bellows fitted to the gas inlet and outlet connections. 

It is common practice to support the fan on anti-vibration mountings and connect the fan casing to the duct by short lengths of flexible non-combustible material. Care should be taken during installation to see that these are aligned to prevent entry turbulence and noise generation. 

Requirements for ancillary equipment, for example, water pumps, valves, piping, anti-vibration mountings, aftercoolers, dryers, intake filters and silencers, etc.). 

Mounts should be installed so that the whole machine is isolated from the structure. Services (e.g. power, hydraulics, etc.) should also be mounted flexibly. Bridging is the most common fault when providing vibration isolation to machines and building stmctures, and should be carefully avoided. Services should be designed to withstand the degree of movement permitted by the anti-vibration mounts without suffering damage.

Fan motors should be sized at 25% above the brake horsepower. Fans should be belt driven with variable pitch drives up to and including 25 FIP and fixed pitch drives at about 25 FIP. Fans must be radial and they must be balanced (static and dynamic) and mounted on anti-vibration supports. The connection of the fan outlet to the inside panels must be done by means of an internal flexible connector. 

It is important to mount the glove box on some form of anti-vibration device but this system need not be particularly sophisticated.

As far as possible, the cryostat construction should isolate the detector from mechanical vihration (anti-microphonic mountings). It has been suggested that even the slight vibrations caused by bubbles from the boiling nitrogen can cause a certain amount of electronic noise. 

Many detectors manage without if but it is not a bad idea to mount the Dewar on an anti-vibration support. If there is heavy machinery nearby in the building, this may be a necessity. A sheet of expanded polystyrene or polyurethane would be fine. Thin plywood on thick polyurethane is sometimes recommended, hut note that wood is not a good material for low level counting systems because of the °K it contains.

Optics Issues relative to hygroscopic optics and the need to pay attention to mirror mounts relative to vibration and/or thermal effects have already been addressed. Zinc selenide is an important alternative material, especially when anti-reflection coated. If potassium bromide absolutely has to be used for its lower transmission range (down to 400 cm-1) then a protective coating must be used. Most process analyzers use protective windows between the spectrometer and the sample interface. If used, back reflections from the window surfaces into the interferometer must be avoided because these will cause photometric errors. 

In many applications, intermittent or dynamic loads arise over much shorter time scales. Examples of such products include chair seats, panels that vibrate and transmit noise, engine mounts and other anti-... 

This thick-film hybrid circuit module is part of an anti-lock brake system. It was designed to mount directly on the brake master cylinder where it had to withstand extreme environmental conditions. The module was successfully qualified after being subjected to vibration, brake fluid exposure.
