Anti-sparking

The belt drive must be properly grounded. In explosive or hazardous atmospheres, belts are not recommended, but if used, they must be of the anti-sparking design with special brushes to ensure the grounding of static charges. 

The deposits formed in internal combustion engines by high-octane petrols may be classed as ashes they consist of mixtures of lead oxides, bromides and sulphates derived from the anti-knock additives and, of course, exert their main corrosive effect on the parts operating at the highest temperature the exhaust valves and the sparking-plug electrodes. 

Electricity at rest as opposed to moving or current electricity. Static electricity can build up on the surface of insulating materials and may either spark across to an adjacent object or give a shock to anyone handling the material. See Anti-Static Rubber. 

To avoid risks of electrostatic charging (sparks, explosions) anti-static additives are sometimes added to a polymer also carbon black may be used (see MT 8.2.1). 

The discovery that protease inhibitors were effective against HIV sparked intensive work in many laboratories on preparing proprietary compounds. Some nine discrete anti-HIV protease inhibitors have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as of this writing. The account that follows describes only a few from that large group. 

The alcohol also finds use in the manufacture of lube and fuel oil additives and synthetic lubricants (about 6 percent of domestic consumption). The zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate anti-wear additive based on 2-ethylhexanol provides ideal compatability, oil solubility, and high temperature stability in many lube oils for both spark ignition and diesel engines.

Ethyl-4-[2-(t-butylcarbonyloxy)butoxy] benzoate (ETB, ZR-2646, 71) occupies an intermediate position between the juvenile hormone mimics and the antijuvenile hormones to be discussed later. It acts as an anti-JH at low doses and as a JH mimic at high doses. The nature of this JH agonist/antagonist action is not understood, yet its interference with the induction of juvenile hormone esterase seems to elucidate at least partly its action on insects (Staal, 1977 Sparks et al., 1979).

Procure only anti-skid gratings, in removable section for making work platforms (to enable maintenance/replacement of equipment etc.). They should be obtained with coating of anti-corrosive paints. Rubber coating may be employed and workers instmcted to use shoes with rabber soles to avoid sparking when explosive or inflammable vapours are present neaiby. 

Compounds dissipate a surface charge and can be processed by normal thermoplastic methods. Typical applications are boxes and in-plant handling containers for electronic components or chemicals where there is a risk of explosion from a spark. Medical products also increasingly have ESD specification, especially for use in an operating theatre. Packaging products such as flexible films also require some form of anti-static treatment, either by means of an additive, or by using external field generators. 

It is the proton inhibition that has sparked the controversy over the mechanism of the Wacker reaction. Fortnnately, one obvious mechanism, anti attack of hydroxide on the olefin TT-complex, PdCl2(C2H4)(H20), can be eliminated by kinetic considerations. Using measured values of Ki and estimated minimnm valnes of K2, the rate of hydroxide attack can be shown to be faster than a diffnsion-controlled process and thns clearly impossible. The remaining possibilities, shown in Scheme 3, are anti attack of water in an equilibrium step or an acid-base eqnilibrinm followed by syn attack of coordinated hydroxide in the rate-determining step.
