Styrene/divinylbenzene copolymers, polymethacrylate, and polyvinyl resins are the most important organic compounds that were tested for their suitability as substrate materials in the manufacturing process for polymer-based anion exchangers. 

With a 50 X 4.6 mm column packed with a polymethacrylate anion exchanger of 30 3 p/mL capacity, the chromatographic behavior of several anions was studied by direct photometric detection at 210 nm. Linear plots were obtained for log k (log retention factor) vs. log NaCl concentration in the eluent (Fig. 6.15). 

A special type of peculiar anion exchanger was first introduced in 1975. Like anion exchangers, cation exchangers are divided into polymer-based cation exchangers (PS-DVB, EVB-DVB, polymethacrylate, and polyvinyl copolymers), latex-agglomerated cation exchangers, silica-based, and other (e.g., crown ether, aluminia materials).Modern cation exchangers contain sulfonic, carboxylic, car-boxylic-phosphonic, and carboxylic-phosphonic-crown ether functional groups. 

For many years, the only polyvinyl alcohol-based anion-exchange resins were available from Interaction Chemicals (Mountain View, CA, USA) under the trade names ION-100 and ION-110 [30]. These macroreticular resins were stable at pH values between 0 and 14, thus allowing the use of a variety of eluents. However, in comparison with polymethacrylate resins such as TSK Gel IC-PW, this stationary phase exhibited a much lower chromatographic efficiency [31].
