Analog computation

A drop of water that is placed on a hillside will roll down the slope, following the surface curvature, until it ends up in the valley at the bottom of the hill. This is a natural minimization process by which the drop minimizes its potential energy until it reaches a local minimum. Minimization algorithms are the analogous computational procedures that find minima for a given function. Because these procedures are downhill methods that are unable to cross energy barriers, they end up in local minima close to the point from which the minimization process started (Fig. 3a). It is very rare that a direct minimization method... [Pg.77]

The method is quite effective, but is not widely used now because of the ubiquity of digital computers. Zuman and Patel - 36. show circuit designs for some kinetic schemes. Williams and Bruice made good use of the analog computer in their study of the reduction of pyruvate by 1,5-dihydroflavin. In this simulation eight rate constants were evaluated variations in these parameters of 5% yielded discemibly poorer curve fits. [Pg.115]

The Field of Numerical Analysis.—As used here, numerical analysis will be taken to represent the art and science of digital computation. The art is learned mainly by experience hence, this chapter will be concerned with explicit techniques and the mathematical principles that justify them. Digital computation is to be contrasted with analog computation, which is the use of slide rules, differential analyzers, model basins, and other devices in which such physical magnitudes as lengths, voltages, etc., represent the quantities under consideration. [Pg.50]

P the total pressure, aHj the mole fraction of hydrogen in the gas phase, and vHj the stoichiometric coefficient of hydrogen. It is assumed that the hydrogen concentration at the catalyst surface is in equilibrium with the hydrogen concentration in the liquid and is related to this through a Freundlich isotherm with the exponent a. The quantity Hj is related to co by stoichiometry, and Eg and Ag are related to - co because the reaction is accompanied by reduction of the gas-phase volume. The corresponding relationships are introduced into Eqs. (7)-(9), and these equations are solved by analog computation. [Pg.85]

The key to successful application of the experimental optimization techniques is based on adequate experimental design. A system based on this experimental design (see Table 4), but utilizing a special analog computer for analysis, was presented by Clax-ton [19] as the Firestone Computer/Optimizer. [Pg.619]

Other types of machines that are not based on neural networks were also suggested as continuous-time models. Pour-El [157] constructed a general-purpose analog computer using a finite number of the following units ... [Pg.133]

Another model for an analog computer was suggested by Rubel [158,159], Called an extended analog computer, it is also based on a finite number of functions that are applied on independent variables. The machine consists of several levels, and the outputs of level A — 1 are used as the inputs of level N. The computing is achieved by black boxes of various kinds, such as adders, multipliers, substituters, and differentiators. [Pg.134]

Attempts were made to fit the product data using various forms of the function f(t). (Early attempts to fit product data using various forms of f(t) were reported in the preprint of this paper, distributed at the Symposium on Oxidation. These were incorrect, owing to a malfunction in our analog computer. The present results require a modification of the conclusion originally drawn.) The plot of f(t) in Figure 4, which accurately reproduces the observed product distribution is of the form... [Pg.290]

Solutions of Eqns. 32 through 35 on an analog computer are shown in Fig. 6 for the case of polymerization in a closed system. The plots of rp(t) and p(t) are seen to be in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations shown in Fig. 7. The model of polymerization kinetics was also found to provide curves of rp versus discharge current density and monomer flow rate which were consistent qualitatively with the experimentally observed results. [Pg.58]
