Most of the time, the powerful analgesia suppHed by morphine and the other opioid analgesics is not needed. Rather, a mild analgesic, such as aspirin, the most commonly employed analgesic agent, can be used for the treatment of simple pain associated with headaches, minor muscle pain, mild trauma, arthritis, cold and flu symptoms, and fever. [Pg.385]

Uses. Aspirin has analgesic, antiinflammatory, and antipyretic activity. It is used for the reHef of less severe types of pain, such as headache, neuritis, acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis, and toothache. Aspirin can be purchased in a variety of OTC and prescription dosage forms made and formulated by many companies. Tablets, ie, buffered, plain, or enteric-coated, are the most familiar in the United States, but other forms such as powder and effervescent formulations are of considerable importance in other parts of the world. [Pg.291]

Thus, acetylation of aniline affords acetanilide (20), an analgesic widely used in proprietary headache remedies. A similar transformation on p-aminophenol gives the analgesic, acetaminophen (21). It is of interest that the latter is also formed in vivo on administration of 21. An interesting preparation of this drug involves Schmidt rearrangement of the hydrazone (24) from p-liydroxyacetophenone. ... [Pg.111]

ISPHOSPHONATES The nurse monitors the patient taking the bisphosphonates for any adverse reactions such as nausea, diarrhea, increased or recurrent bone pain, headache dyspepsia, acid regurgitation, dysphagia, and abdominal pain. Report numbness, tingling of extremities, severe headache, dyspnea, or chest pain. Jbint pain may occur but can be controlled with analgesics. [Pg.441]

GC, a 28-year-old woman, complains of a "terrible headache that won t go away." She describes the pain as "on one side and throbbing." The pain began yesterday morning and caused her to leave work. She reports a history of similar headaches since the age of 16, but none that lasted this long. In the past, her headaches were relieved with the use of over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). She often has to take analgesics multiple times per week. [Pg.502]

Acetaminophen Monitor patients for analgesic overuse, which may lead to dependence and the precipitation of withdrawal headaches. [Pg.510]

Vincamine (91) is the major alkaloid of V. minor, a plant used against headache and vertigo. It exerts a sedative CNS action and produces a fall in blood pressure. The principal activity is a moderate cerebral vasodilation. Clinical studies have demonstrated that i.v. administration of 91 to humans reduces the arterial blood pressure and increases cerebral blood flow and oxygen consumption. The improved cerebral hemodynamic conditions significantly and positively affect the state of patients with advanced arteriosclerosis with beneficial effects on memory, concentration, and behavior. It has thereafter been introduced under several trade names as a pharmaceutical in many European countries (232). Vobasine (32) has been widely studied it exhibits a weak CNS depressive, analgesic, and antipyretic action (21). [Pg.134]

Medical Management No specific viral therapy exists so treatment is supportive only. Treat patients with uncomplicated VEE infection with analgesics to relieve headache and myalgia. Patients who develop encephalitis could require anticonvulsants and intensive care to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, ensure adequate ventilation, and avoid complicating secondary bacterial infections. Patients should be treated in a screened room or in quarters treated with residual insecticide for at least five days after onset, or until afebrile (without fever) to foil mosquitoes since humans may remain infectious for mosquitoes for at least seventy-two hours. Isolation and qaurantine is not required. Standard Precautions should be practiced when dealing with infection control for VEE victims as shown below ... [Pg.187]

Mild symptoms are relieved by 0-5 per cent atropine ointment in the eye, aspirin as a mild analgesic for pains in the ciliary muscles and headache, ephedrine to deal with bronchospasm. [Pg.229]

The most frequently observed symptoms include vomiting (82%), nausea (74%), abdominal cramps (64%), diarrhea (64%), and also headaches and muscular cramping. The onset of symptoms usually starts after 6 to 10 hours after food ingestion, however they may be reported earlier. The lethal cases are rare and occur among infants and elderly people. Only 10% of affected people need medical treatment - treatments include analgesics, antidiarrheic drugs, and administration of fluids. [Pg.209]
