Tributyltin antifouling paints were banned for use in tin-based paints in the U.K. in 1987. Field work on the River Crouch Estuary showed that sediments from areas most contaminated with TBT in 1987 contained 0.16 mg TBT/kg DW however, by 1992 this had declined to 0.02 mg TBT/kg DW. TBT declines were accompanied by increases in abundance and diversity of benthic fauna, especially bivalve molluscs and amphipod crustaceans (Rees et al. 1999 Waldock et al. 1999).

For example. Great Lakes sediments containing elevated levels of PAHs were reported by Eadie et al. (1983) to be the source of the body burdens of the compounds in bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Varanasi et al. (1985) found that benzo[a]pyrene was accumulated in fish, amphipod crustaceans, shrimp, and clams when estuarine sediment was the source of the compound. Approximate tissue to sediment ratios were 0.6-1.2 for amphipods, 0.1 for clams, and 0.05 for fish and shrimp.

This pelagic gastropod seems the sole representative of the order Gymnosomata to have been studied chemically. This opisthobranch is protected from fish by a substance that permeates the dorsal part of its body, and this protective device is exploited by the amphipod crustacean Hyperidla dilatata, which attaches itself to the back of the mollusk to protect itself from predators.
