Ammonium picrate

Ammonium picrate (explosive D) is manufactured by the neutralization of a hot aqueous solution of picric acid (2,4,6-trinitrophenol) with aqueous ammonia. [Pg.58]

It is used in armor-piercing shells as a bursting charge. Ammonium picrate is a salt and does not melt, so it must be loaded by compression. [Pg.58]

Picric Acid and Ammonium Picrate. Picric acid (PA) (2,4,6,-trinitrophenol) was the first modem high explosive to be used extensively as a burster ia gun projectiles. It was first obtained by nitration of iadigo, and used primarily as a fast dye for silk and wool. It offered many advantages when compressed, it was used as a booster for other explosives, and when cast (melting poiat 122.5°C) served as a burster ia shell it was stable, iasensitive, nonhygroscopic, relatively nontoxic, and of high density when cast, and could be made economically by simple nitration. [Pg.18]

Ammonium picrate (AP) is used only where a high explosive is required that is particularly iasensitive to shock. It has been employed ia pressed form primarily as a burster ia aaval projectiles for armor peaetratioa. The compouad is very stable and does not form sensitive metallic salts. Its explosive... [Pg.18]

The requirements of the US Armed Forces are described in Military Specification MIL A-166C (6 January 1975) entitled, Ammonium Picrate (Explosive D) It covers one grade of material, representing two classes with respect to granulation. Class 1 material (coarse) is intended for use in the press-loading of shells, while Class 2 (fine) is used for the manuf of Picratol and other compns. The requirements are as follows ... [Pg.755]

The picric acid used to make Class 2 ammonium picrate shall be made by the nitration of phenol and shall contain no material salvaged from trimmings or from loading operations. [Pg.755]

Class 2 ammonium picrate shall contain no reworked ammonium picrate made by way of any process other than the phenol nitration process Not applicable to ammonium picrate made from picric acid produced by the nitration of phenol... [Pg.755]

VI. Uses. During the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early part of the present century, PA was widely used as the main expl charge of projectiles and bombs. This is no longer true, Indeed PA per se is hardly used as an expl. Its current limited expl-related use is primarily in the preparation of Explosive D (Ammonium Picrate) and Lead Picrate. It also finds some use as an intermediate in the manuf of dyes. There is some patent literature on the use of PA as a catalyst for polymerizations. For example, PA is claimed as catalyst in polybutadiene polymerizations (Ref 40), and for the prepn of an isobutylene-5-methyl-1,3,6 hepta-trieie copolymer (Ref 38)... [Pg.767]

TNT is relatively safe to handle and of low toxicity. It is, therefore, preferred to picric acid and ammonium picrate which give sensitive compounds with a variety of metals, and to trinitrobenzene or hexanitrodiphenylamine which are highly toxic. [Pg.31]
