Glycine or amino-acetic acid, NHjCHjCOOH tyrosine, />-HOC<.H4CH2CH(NH2)COOH cystine, [ SCH2CH(NH2)COOH]2. 

The treatment of (2-benzoylamino-5-iodobenzoyl-amino)acetic acid ethyl ester 88 with hydrazine hydrate for 4h yielded hydrazine derivative 2-benzoylamino-iV-hydrazinocarbonylmethyl benzamide 89, which on refluxing with sodium acetate and acetic acid for 8 h resulted in the formation of 6-iodo-10-phenyl-3//-3,4,9,10a-tetra-azaphenanthren-2-one 90 <2000IJH59> (Scheme 5).

Betaine(Trimethyl Glycine Trimethyl Glycocoll or Trimethyl Amino-Acetic Acid), (CH3)aIsI.CHg.CO.O or (CH3)3fo.CH2.CO.O mw 117.15, N 11.96%, OB to COz-184.4%. Prisms(from ale), mp 293°(decomp) sol in w in ale insol in ether occurs in plants (usually together with choline) and in some sea animals. Can be prepd by methylation of amino-acetic acid or by other methods. Betaine has been used in org synthesis to render various compds water-soluble. For instance, Girard s reagent(which is a deriv of betaine) is used to prepare water-sol derivs of insol ketones and aIdehydes(Ref 2,p 510) Betaine forms additive compds with acids and salts, some of them explosive (See below)...

Experiment 5.181 AMINOACETONITRILE AND GLYCINE (Amino-acetic acid)... 

To a clean, dry reaction vessel add cesium fluoride on aluminium oxide (40 wt. %, 1.1 g, 2.2 mmol), ((l-phenyl-methylidene)amino)acetic acid methyl ester (0.35 g, 2.0 mmol), and 3-bromopropylbenzene (0.40 g, 2.0 mmol). 

All these materials produced intumescence to some degree, but only a few showed enough to be of real value. The most effective was a combination of paraformaldehyde, urea, and ammonium phosphate. This confirms the work of Jones and Soll(J.). The combination of isano oil with polyamide resin gave best results in exterior paint formulations. Amino acetic acid with starch and also with ammonium phosphate gave good results.

The tertiary amine group in this last compound being more strongly basic than the primary amine group in amino acetic acid would more readily form an inner ammonium salt. There is also a tetra-methyl ammonium iodide compound formed analogous to the tetra-methyl ammonium salts of the alkyl amines.
