The variability associated with drug absorption from the gastrointestinal tract can be overcome by using a parenteral preparation (dosage form). It should preferably be administered either by intravenous infusion or slow intravenous injection to avoid circulatory overload. Intraosseous administration is a useful alternative to intravenous injection of some antimicrobial agents (e.g. sodium ampicillin or amoxycillin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, gentamicin or amikacin sulphate) in neonatal foals (Fig. 7.1) (Golenz et al, 1994) and puppies (Lavy et al, 1995). This particularly applies when the neonate is in a state of septic shock and/or dehydration. Total plasma protein concentration is an inaccurate index of hydration status unless monitored (repeatedly measured) and interpreted in conjunction with packed cell volume (PCV).

The nephrotoxicity of various combinations of antibiotics was assessed in 171 cancer palienls. In Ihose receiving an aminoglycoside with a third generation cephalosporin, the most nephrotoxic combinations were found to be gentamicin with cefotaxime (although another study did not find this combination to be nephrotoxic ) and amikacin with ceftriaxone, where 5 of 20 and 5 of 13 patients, respectively, had increased serum creatinine. The following combinations were found to be safer amikacin with cefoxitin or ceftazidime, gentamicin with cefoxitin, and netilmicin with cefotaxime. ... 

Hemolytic anemia occurred in a 7-year-old Caribbean-American boy with hemophago-cytic lymphohistiocytosis shortly after he took amikacin and ceftriaxone and resolved after withdrawal of ceftriaxone there were IgM ceftriaxone-dependent antibodies 1 32, falling to zero after 5 days [16 ].
