Common catalyst compositions contain oxides or ionic forms of platinum, nickel, copper, cobalt, or palladium which are often present as mixtures of more than one metal. Metal hydrides, such as lithium aluminum hydride [16853-85-3] or sodium borohydride [16940-66-2] can also be used to reduce aldehydes. Depending on additional functionahties that may be present in the aldehyde molecule, specialized reducing reagents such as trimethoxyalurninum hydride or alkylboranes (less reactive and more selective) may be used. There are numerous variations of the wet process, but all involve an initial step in which the ore is solubilized in sulfuric acid, or, in a few special instances, in some other acid. Because of this requirement for sulfuric acid, it is obvious that sulfur is a raw material of considerable importance to the fertilizer industry. The acid—rock reaction results in formation of phosphoric acid and the precipitation of calcium sulfate. The second principal step in the wet processes is filtration to separate the phosphoric acid from the precipitated calcium sulfate. Wet-process phosphoric acid (WPA) is much less pure than electric furnace acid, but for most fertilizer production the impurities, such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium, are not objectionable and actually contribute to improved physical condition of the finished fertilizer (35). Zeolites. A large and growing industrial use of aluminum hydroxide and sodium alurninate is the manufacture of synthetic zeoHtes (see Molecular sieves). ZeoHtes are aluminosiHcates with Si/Al ratios between 1 and infinity. There are 40 natural, and over 100 synthetic, zeoHtes. AH the synthetic stmctures are made by relatively low (100—150°C) temperature, high pH hydrothermal synthesis. For example the manufacture of the industriaHy important zeoHtes A, X, and Y is generaHy carried out by mixing sodium alurninate and sodium sHicate solutions to form a sodium alurninosiHcate gel. Gel-aging under hydrothermal conditions crystallizes the final product. In special cases, a small amount of seed crystal is used to control the synthesis. [Pg.137]

The vapor-phase conversion of aniline to DPA over a soHd catalyst has been extensively studied (18,22). In general, the catalyst used is pure aluminum oxide or titanium oxide, prepared under special conditions (18). Promoters, such as copper chromite, nickel chloride, phosphoric acid, and ammonium fluoride, have also been recommended. Reaction temperatures are usually from 400 to 500°C. Coke formed on the catalyst is removed occasionally by burning. In this way, conversions of about 35% and yields of 95% have been reported. Carba2ole is frequently a by-product. [Pg.244]
