Alumina chloride process

Two pigment production routes ate in commercial use. In the sulfate process, the ore is dissolved in sulfuric acid, the solution is hydrolyzed to precipitate a microcrystalline titanium dioxide, which in turn is grown by a process of calcination at temperatures of ca 900—1000°C. In the chloride process, titanium tetrachloride, formed by chlorinating the ore, is purified by distillation and is then oxidized at ca 1400—1600°C to form crystals of the required size. In both cases, the taw products are finished by coating with a layer of hydrous oxides, typically a mixture of siUca, alumina, etc. [Pg.122]

There are several processes available for the manufacture of cryoHte. The choice is mainly dictated by the cost and quaUty of the available sources of soda, alumina, and fluoriae. Both the Toth and Alcoa processes provide aluminum chloride for subsequent reduction to aluminum. Pilot-plant tests of these processes have shown difficulties exist in producing aluminum chloride of the purity needed. In the Toth process for the production of aluminum chloride, kaolin [1332-58-7] clay is used as the source of alumina (5). The clay is mixed with sulfur and carbon, and the mixture is ground together, pelletized, and calcined at 700°C. The calcined mixture is chlorinated at 800°C and gaseous aluminum chloride is evolved. The clay used contains considerable amounts of silica, titania, and iron oxides, which chlorinate and must be separated. Silicon tetrachloride and titanium tetrachloride are separated by distillation. Resublimation of aluminum chloride is requited to reduce contamination from iron chloride. [Pg.147]

The large majority of activated alumina products are derived from activation of aluminum hydroxide, rehydrated alumina, or pseudoboehmite gel. Other commerical methods to produce specialty activated aluminas are roasting of aluminum chloride [7446-70-0], AIQ calcination of precursors such as ammonium alum [7784-25-0], AlH2NOgS2. Gas Phase. The gas-phase methanol hydrochlorination process is used more in Europe and Japan than in the United States, though there is a considerable body of Hterature available. The process is typicaHy carried out as foHows vaporized methanol and hydrogen chloride, mixed in equimolar proportions, are preheated to 180—200°C. Reaction occurs on passage through a converter packed with 1.68—2.38 mm (8—12 mesh) alumina gel at ca 350°C. The product gas is cooled, water-scmbbed, and Hquefied. Conversions of over 95% of the methanol are commonly obtained. Garnma-alurnina has been used as a catalyst at 295—340°C to obtain 97.8% yields of methyl chloride (25). Other catalysts may be used, eg, cuprous or zinc chloride on active alumina, carbon, sHica, or pumice (26—30) sHica—aluminas (31,32) zeoHtes (33) attapulgus clay (34) or carbon (35,36). Space velocities of up to 300 h , with volumes of gas at STP per hour per volume catalyst space, are employed. [Pg.514]

Ethylamines. Mono-, di-, and triethylamines, produced by catalytic reaction of ethanol with ammonia (330), are a significant outlet for ethanol. The vapor-phase continuous process takes place at 1.38 MPa (13.6 atm) and 150—220°C over a nickel catalyst supported on alumina, siUca, or sihca—alumina. In this reductive amination under a hydrogen atmosphere, the ratio of the mono-, di-, and triethylamine product can be controlled by recycling the unwanted products. Other catalysts used include phosphoric acid and derivatives, copper and iron chlorides, sulfates, and oxides in the presence of acids or alkaline salts (331). Piperidine can be ethylated with ethanol in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst at 200°C and 10.3 MPa (102 atm), to give W-ethylpiperidine [766-09-6] (332). [Pg.415]

Certain chemicals (sorbents) have the ability to absorb moisture from a gas they may be either solid or liquid. Performance of a chemical dehumidifi cation device depends on the sorbent used. The sorbent must t>e able to attract and remove the sorbate, such as water, from the gas stream, Stirbems absorb water on the surface of the material by adsorption or by chemically combining with water (absorption). If the unit is regenerative, the process is reversible, allowing water to be removed. This is achieved by a sorbent such as silica gel, alumina gel, activated alumina, lithium chloride salt, lithium chloride solution, glycol solution, or molecular sieves. The process of isolation finally adopted by the former authors consists in precipitating as reineckates the water-soluble bases contained in a methyl alcoholic extract of the curare. The mixed reineckates are further purified, by solution in acetone and precipitation with water as often as may be necessary. The product so cleaned represents the bulk of the biological activity of the crude drug the mother liquors may contain curine (p. 374), which indicates a menisperm as one of the components of such curares. The mixed reineckates are then fractionated chromato-graphically over alumina and the components isolated as chlorides by the use of silver sulphate and barium chloride in succession. More than 4 million tons of titanium dioxide are produced per year and it is widely used for industrial applications (paints, inks, plastics, textiles) and in small amounts as a food colorant. ° "° Production and properties — Titanium oxide is mainly produced from ilmenite, a titaniferous ore (FeTiOj). Rutile and anatase are relatively pure titanium dioxide (Ti02) forms. Titanium oxide pigment is produced via chloride or sulfate processes via the treatment of the titanium oxide ore with chlorine gas or sulfuric acid, followed by a series of purification steps. High-purity anatase is preferred for utilization in the food industry. It may be coated with small amounts of alumina or silica to improve technological properties. [Pg.118]

The first production of aluminum was by the chemical reduction of aluminum chloride with sodium. The electrolytic process, based on the fused salt electrolysis of alumina dissolved in cryolite, was independently developed in 1886 by C. M. Hall in America and P. L. Heroult in France. Soon afterwards a chemical process for producing pure alumina from bauxite, the commercial source of aluminum, was developed by Bayer and this led to the commercial production of aluminum by a combination of the Bayer and the Hall-Heroult processes. At present this is the main method which supplies all the world s needs in primary aluminum. However, a few other processes also have been developed for the production of the metal.
