Alpha Bits

This category is one of the most popular among breakfast cereals. Many wheat and oat-based breakfast cereals such as Cheerios, Kix, and Alpha Bits are manufactured... [Pg.346]

They realized that the particles emitted by radioactive elements as they decay are in fact little bits of the atomic nuclei. By expelling them, the nucleus alters the number of protons it contains, and so it becomes the nucleus of a different element. Alpha decay carries off two protons and two neutrons (a helium nucleus), and so it converts one element to a slightly lighter element two columns earlier in the Periodic Table. Beta decay transforms a neutron into an electron (which is emitted) and a proton (which stays in the nucleus) - so the atomic number increases and the element moves one column further across the Periodic Table. Niels Bohr and Soddy formulated this rule, which was called the radioactive displacement law. [Pg.95]

EXTENSIONS AND COMMENTARY In the 1960 s there was quite a bit of interest in a couple of pharmaceutical houses with the indole analogues of amphetamine. Both the alpha-methylated tryptamine (this compound, a-MT) and the alpha-ethylated homologue (a-ET, see its separate recipe) were found to be effective monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and both were clinically studied as potential antidepressants. The ethyl compound became a commercial drug, offered by the Upjohn Company as Monase, but now is considered to be without medical use and is a Schedule I drug. It is interesting that this methyl compound, a-MT was also a medically available antidepressant in the Soviet Union in the 1960 s and was sold under the name of Indopan, in 5 and 10 milligram tablets. [Pg.237]

This is what they thought at first. I m giving you a bit of history here. The reaction of beryllium-8 and helium-4 seemed too slow. There was one chance that the reaction speed could be boosted—if carbon-12 had a very special property an energy almost exactly equal to the combined energy of beryllium-8 and helium-4 at temperatures in a red giant. Chemists called this kind of facilitated nuclear reaction resonant. If by some miracle this were true, then the triple-alpha process could work. ... [Pg.154]

The amount of bitterness that a hop will add to a beer is a function of its alpha acid content, which is often listed as a percentage on the package label. Different homebrewers use different methods of gauging the expected bitterness of the beer. The method that we use is the alpha acid unit (AAU), which is described in Charlie Papazian s book, The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. One AAU is equal to one percent alpha acid per ounce. On this scale, an ounce of hops with 5% alpha content is said to contribute 5 AAUs of bitterness. A recipe that lists hop additions in AAUs is better than one that lists hop additions in ounces because it makes it easier for the brewer to substitute hop varieties. For example, if a recipe calls for 7 AAUs of a hop such as Clusters, the brewer can easily add a bit more of a lower alpha content hop or a bit less of a higher alpha content hop. [Pg.8]

The Curiosity rover has a whole suite of chemistry tools on board. The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) tool is probably the coolest. This instrument breaks down rocks and bits of soil by firing a (freaking) laser at the target. The elements that made up that rock are then detected by atomic emission spectroscopy. Curiosity also contains an alpha particle (He + ion) X-ray spectrometer (APXS), which is also used to measure what elements make up a sample. If the NASA scientists want to know more... [Pg.261]

This qualifier decrements the base rating of the transform for each primary halide that is on a cyclic carbon which is not a part of the path keying the transform. From this example, it is possible to see how densely the chemical data is packed (one qualifier takes up only one computer word - 52 bits). There is a target to be searched for (the halide), a domain or location to which the search is restricted (alpha to the carbon but on a rirxg and off the path), and an iteration command indicating that the operation (the subtraction) is to be performed for each occurrence. [Pg.23]

The internal consistencies were calculated for each subscale. Cronbach s alpha for the KU data is only 0.56 for the intellectual accessibUity scale, which is quite a bit lower than the satisfactory level of 0.7. Cronbach s alpha increases to 0.78 if item 6 is deleted from this scale. Crmibach s alpha for both subscales for WU and SE are above the rule-of-thumb satisfactory level of 0.7. [Pg.187]

In ordinary chemical reactions the chemical properties of an element depend only on the electrons outside the nucleus, and the properties are essentially the same for all isotopes of the element. The nuclear properties of the various isotopes of an element are quite different, however. In the radioactive decay series beginning with uranium-238, goTh emits a j8-particle, whereas a bit farther down the line loTh ejects an a-particle. Both Ph and g Pb are j8-particle emitters toward the end of the series, while the final product, gfPb, has a stable nucleus, emitting neither alpha nor beta particles nor gamma rays. [Pg.605]

The color lookup table implements 3 look-up tables with 256 x 10 bit entries each. These can be used for different kinds of applications. For non-linear color transformations (called gamma correction), the color components R, G and B are processed independendy. The input code is used as a table index and the table entry as a 10-bit output color code. The alpha value inputs are by-passed (unchanged) through the color lookup table. The second application is to use the table as an indirect color palette (lookup index). To implement reduced memory bandwidth, the index is interpreted to a 10-bit color in the palette. [Pg.242]
