Ferrous Alloys. Many ancient objects allegedly made of iron actually consist not of the pure metal but of alloys of iron and carbon known by the generic name ferrous alloys. These can be broadly classified into two classes steel and cast iron. Steel is the common name for iron-carbon alloys in which the relative amount of carbon ranges between 0.03% and 2%. If the relative amount of carbon in the alloy exceeds 2%, the alloy is known as cast iron (see Table 33) (Angus 1976 Wertime 1961). Steel is outstanding because of the mechanical properties that it acquires when subjected to heat treatment, which causes changes in its structure and physical properties (see Textbox... [Pg.198]

Low Expansion Alloys. Binary Fe—Ni alloys as well as several alloys of the type Fe—Ni—X, where X = Cr or Co, are utilized for their low thermal expansion coefficients over a limited temperature range. Other elements also may be added to provide altered mechanical or physical properties. Common trade names include Invar (64%Fe—36%Ni), F.linvar (52%Fe—36%Ni—12%Cr) and super Invar (63%Fe—32%Ni—5%Co). These alloys, which have many commercial appHcations, are typically used at low (25—500°C) temperatures. Exceptions are automotive pistons and components of gas turbines. These alloys are useful to about 650°C while retaining low coefficients of thermal expansion. Alloys 903, 907, and 909, based on 42%Fe—38%Ni—13%Co and having varying amounts of niobium, titanium, and aluminum, are examples of such alloys (2). [Pg.122]

The alloy name in the United States can include a company name or trademark in conjunction with the composition for alloyed titanium or the strength, ie, ultimate tensile strength for Timet and yield strength for other U.S. producers, for unalloyed titanium. Special quality steels - A vast range of special quality steels is made in electric arc furnaces by adding other metals to form steel alloys. The most commonly known of these is stainless steel, which has chromium and nickel added to form a corrosion-resistant steel. There are very many others however the very hard steels used to make machine tools, the steels specially formulated to make them suitable for engineering, steels developed to survive for decades the hostile environment of nuclear reactors, light but strong steels used in aerospace, extra tough steels for armor plating - to name but a few. [Pg.116]
