Allied-Signal Process. Cyclohexanone [108-94-1] is produced in 98% yield at 95% conversion by liquid-phase catal57tic hydrogenation of phenol. Hydroxylamine sulfate is produced in aqueous solution by the conventional Raschig process, wherein NO from the catalytic air oxidation of ammonia is absorbed in ammonium carbonate solution as ammonium nitrite (eq. 1). The latter is reduced with sulfur dioxide to hydroxylamine disulfonate (eq. 2), which is hydrolyzed to acidic hydroxylamine sulfate solution (eq. 3). 

Kapton resin (5) (113) and Upilex (6) resin (114) are sold as films, partially polymerized resin coating solutions, and sinterable powders. Allied Signal also offers Apical polyimide film.

DSM and Allied Signal have developed carpet identification equipment that can identify specific plastics. Particularly carpet made of nylon 6 (or nylon 66) fibres are separated, cut into pieces, isolated, and converted by polycondensation into their monomeric components. The monomers can then be reused in the production of nylon. DSM and Allied Signal opened the world s first large scale carpet recycling plant in Augusta, Georgia, US in November 1999. This plant has a capacity of 90,000 tpa nylon 6 carpet waste (109). 

Many academic and industrial scientists serve as advisors to various federal agency programs in materials science. For example, the evaluation board for the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory (MSEL) at NIST contains representatives from Bell Laboratories, DuPont, General Electric, Allied Signal, and numerous universities. The private sector would like to improve the interactions at the strategic policy level, but some bureaucratic handicaps must be overcome. 

The number of such examples, however, is not high. In many other examples of advanced-performance materials, such as DuPont s Kevlar and Allied Signal s SPECTRA, the volume applications associated with system-for-system substitution has not yet occurred at a level necessary to pay back the development and commercialization costs already expended. High-performance ceramics is another area in which the early promise has yet to materialize. The consequences of Eckstut s life-cycle dynamics have been overcapacity and severe rationalization in high-performance carbon fiber businesses, some specialty alloy activities, and high-performance polymer composites. Thus, with critical technologies that involve advanced-performance materials, we need to better understand how to exploit their value in a commercially viable way.

All maleimides were synthesized according to standard procedures.16 Maleic anhydride, dimethyl maleate, and diethyl fiimarate were purchased from Aldrich Chemical Co. and used as received. 1,4-Cyclohexanedimethanol divinyl ether (CHVE) and tetraethylene glycol divinyl ether (CHVE) were used as received from International Speciality Products. Bis(4-vinyloxybutyl) isophthalate (IPDBVE) and bis(vinyloxybutyl)succinate (SEGDVE) were obtained from Allied-Signal and used without further purification. All acrylates were used as received from either Aldrich Chemical Co. or Scientific Polymer Products. 2,2-Dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMAP) was used as received from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. 

SOXAL A flue-gas desulfurization process, basically similar to the Wellman-Lord process but regenerating the bisulfite solution in a membrane electrochemical cell. Developed by Allied Signal Group and piloted at the Florida Power Light Company, Miami, FL, in 1991. A larger demonstration plant was planned for Dunkirk, New York.
