Mechanisms of non-immediate reactions are unclear but may be immunological and non-immunological. Delayed reactions of the IgE type are known (131). Aminopenicillins seem to be an important cause of non-immediate reactions (132-134). The morbilliform rash that begins 1-10 days after amoxicillin can be caused by a delayed cell-mediated immune reaction (135) as can fixed drug eruptions (136,137), toxic epidermal necrolysis (138-140), bullous erythroderma (141), and contact eczema (142). Investigation of these disorders should include delayed readings of skin tests (135). In patients with chronic urticaria, penicillin allergy was demonstrated by cutaneous tests. 

Allergic or immediate-type reactions to hormones are as varied as the hormone preparations themselves. In many cases the presence of reaginic antibody or positive skin tests confirm the diagnosis of allergy to the hormone. Occasionally, immediate reactions occur very early in treatment or may represent an intolerance to pharmacological doses of the hormone. Thus although immediate-type reactions to hormone administrations are quite rare, the literature cited here emphasizes potential problems which may occur during their routine use. 

In contrast to the above results, the basophil activation test was positive to the implicated quinolone in all five subjects with immediate reactions to a quinolone who were tested [19 ]. However, this assay quantified CD203C, which may be a more sensitive marker than CD63 for detecting IgE-mediated allergy.

There are no reliable studies to indicate the frequency of food allergy in adults. Most persons who have acute immediate reactions to foods have been aware of their sensitivity since childhood. However, occasional adults...

When iodine solutions are administered, the nurse observes Hie patient closely for symptoms of iodism and iodine allergy (see Adverse Reactions).
