Some of the compounds described in this chapter were studied for specific physical properties. Surface tension measurements with solutions of 9-16 in 0.01 M hydrochloric acid demonstrated that these zwitterionic X5Si-silicates are highly efficient surfactants.21 These compounds contain a polar (zwitterionic) hydrophilic moiety and a long lipophilic z-alkyl group. Increase of the n-alkyl chain length (9-15) was found to result in an increase of surface activity. The equilibrium surface tension vs concentration isotherms for 9 and 16 were analyzed quantitatively and the surface thermodynamics of these surfactants interpreted on the molecular level. Furthermore, preliminary studies demonstrated that aqueous solutions of 9-16 lead to a hydrophobizing of glass surfaces.21... [Pg.227]

Mesoporous materials of the M41S family with their regular arrays of uniform pore openings and high surface areas have attracted much attention since their first synthesis in 1992 (61), because their properties were expected to open new applications as catalysts and/or adsorbents. These materials are formed by condensation of an amorphous silicate phase in the presence of surfactant molecules (usually ammonium salts with long alkyl chains). However, the chemistry of the steps of the synthesis process is still not fully clear. Ideas put forward so far include (a) condensation of a silicate phase on the surface of a liquid crystalline phase preformed by the surfactant molecules (62) (b) assembly of layers of silicate species in solution followed by puckering of those layers to form hexagonal channels (63) and (c) formation of randomly disordered rod-like micelles with the silicate species... [Pg.281]

The information about synthetic mordenite properties was obtained in 1961 when Keough and Sand (7) found that H- and other forms of this crystalline aluminum silicate display high activity and selectivity in the reactions of hydrocarbon cracking and ethanol dehydration. Later this zeolite was shown (J, 2, 5, 7, 8, 10-13, 15, 16) an active catalyst in the reactions of isomerization, cracking, and alkylation of hydrocarbons and alcohol dehydration. However, the catalytic properties of mordenite have been studied insufEciently, compared with those of other zeolites. [Pg.442]

When refering to shape selectivity properties related to diffusivity, it seems obvious that the larger the zeolite grain, the higher will be the volume/sur f ace ratios and the shape selectivity, since the reaction will be more diffusion controlled. The external surface area represents different percents of the total zeolite area depending on the size of the grains which could be important if the active sites at the external surface also play a role in the selectivity. For instance in the case of toluene alkylation by methanol, the external surface acid sites will favor the thermodynamical equilibrium due to isomerization reactions (o m p-xylene - 25 50 25 at 400 C) while diffusivity resistance will favor the less bulky isomer namely the para-xylene. It may therefore be useful to neutralize the external surface acidity either by some bulky basic molecules or by terminating the synthesis with some Al free layers of siliceous zeolite. [Pg.267]

The synthesis of polymer nanocomposites is an integral aspect of polymer nanotechnology. By inserting the nanometric inorganic compounds, the properties of polymers improve and hence this has a lot of applications depending upon the inorganic material present in the polymers. The improvements obtained in day/PP nanocomposite structure can make this commercial thermoplastic polymer more suitable for automotive, construction and packaging applications. Different alkyl ammonium surfactants and compatibilizer was used to produce layered silicate/PP nanocomposites by the same melt intercalation technique. [Pg.282]
