Alkyd waterborne coating

Field trials have shown that the expected durability of the new waterborne coating systems is equal to that of conventional solventborne paints. As a further advantage, the number of single coats can be reduced from three to two. Standard freight cars are painted with a three-coat alkyd system consisting of an anticorrosive primer, an intermediate coat, and a topcoat, total DFT is ca. 150 pm. Such systems are being replaced by single-coat systems of waterborne acrylic resins and acrylic copolymers to reduce solvent emission. [Pg.250]

In commercial use since 1927 [18], alkyd resins are among the most widely used anticorrosion coatings. They are one-component air-curing paints and, therefore, are fairly easy to use. Alkyds are relatively inexpensive. Alkyds can be formulated into both solvent-borne and waterborne coatings. [Pg.23]

Most of the important types of modem solvent-borne coatings — epoxies, alkyds, acrylics — are also available in waterborne formulations. In recent years, even urethane polymer technology has been adapted for use in waterborne coatings [1]. However, waterborne paints are not simply solvent-borne paints in which the organic solvent has been replaced with water the paint chemist must design an entirely new system from the ground up. In this chapter, we discuss how waterborne paints differ from their solvent-bome counterparts. [Pg.55]

For environmental reasons, waterborne coatings are being used increasingly. The binder may be either dispersed or dissolved in the water phase. Dispersion coatings show lower gloss and less good adherence than the dissolved types such as alkyds, ureum and melamine, phenol, and acrylic-type coatings. [Pg.687]

Core-shell particles have been produced both chemically [134] and electrochemically [135]. For example, a dispersion of electrically conductive core-shell particles was obtained by polymerizing pyrrole or aniline in the presence of a dispersion of polyurethane or alkyd resin particles [134]. Coatings from these dispersions were reported to have conductivities in the range of 10 to 10 S/cm [134]. This coreshell approach, though yet to be fully exploited in the area of corrosion protection, enables formation of CP-containing films from waterborne dispersions. [Pg.1623]
