Although there are numerous families of lamellar solids, only a handful of them exhibit the kind of versatile intercalation chemistry that forms the basis of this book. In arriving at the content of this volume, the editors have accurately identified six classes of versatile layered compounds that are at the forefront of materials intercalation chemistry, namely, smectite clays, zirconium phosphates and phos-phonates, layered double hydroxides (known informally as hydrotalcites or anionic clays ), layered manganese oxides, layered metal chalcogenides, and lamellar alkali silicates and silicic acids. The reactions of cyanide to various minerals are summarized in a report by Hedley and Tabachnik (H21). The conditions for easy extraction of gold from its ore include a high degree of liberation of the gold minerals, a cyanide solution free of impurities, and a sufficient amount of oxygen available in the solution during the reaction. Quartz, silicate minerals, and alkali metal carbonates are relatively insoluble in cyanide solutions. The other metals that are normally associated with most gold and silver ores cause complications in the chemistry of cyanidation. Published experimental studies of mineral/cal-cium hydroxide reactions show that at low temperatures (below 110°C), the chief reaction products are calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gels, while zeolites and feldspars are formed at higher temperatures and in the presence of alkalis NaOH and KOH. The phase identifications have however often been made by low resolution or bulk methods, neither of which are ideal for such material. Published results of numerical simulations are in broad agreement with those of experimental studies of cement/ rock interaction.
