Chlorella algae

A similarity-related approach is k-nearest neighbor (KNN) analysis, based on the premise that similar compounds have similar properties. Compounds are distributed in multidimensional space according to their values of a number of selected properties the toxicity of a compound of interest is then taken as the mean of the toxicides of a number (k) of nearest neighbors. Cronin et al. [65] used KNN to model the toxicity of 91 heterogeneous organic chemicals to the alga Chlorella vulgaris, but found it no better than MLR. [Pg.481]

Freshwater and marine alga were unaffected at water diazinon concentrations that were fatal (i.e., 1000 pg/L) to aquatic invertebrates (Stadnyk and Campbell 1971 Shacklock and Croft 1981). However, diazinon at 1.0 pg/L induced extensive clumping of a freshwater alga (Chlorella pyrenoi-dosa) onto the antennae of Daphnia magna within 24 h (Stratton and Corke 1981). The affected daphnids were immobilized and settled to the bottom of the test containers. The causes of particulate matter adhesion are open to speculation, and additional research is merited. [Pg.975]

Two other compounds have been examined for therapeutic action in animal (rat) models of chlordecone poisoning. Sporopollenin, a carotenoid polymer derived from the cell walls of the alga Chlorella prothecoides, was reported to bind to chlordecone (Pore 1984). In animal studies using rats, sporopollenin decreased the half life of chlordecone from 40 days to 19 days. The excretion rate in control animals fed a-cellulose, in the same bulk amount as sporopollenin, did not change. Prevention of enterohepatic recirculation of chlordecone was also evaluated with liquid paraffin. [Pg.149]
