Racemic a-ionone (513) was converted to 4-hydroxy-a-ionone (514), which was further dehydrogenated to 4-oxo-a-ionone (515) by Chlorella ellipsoidea IAMC-27 and C. vulgaris IAMC-209. a-Ionone (513) was reduced preferentially to a-ionol (516) by Chlorella sorokiniana and Chlorella salina (Noma et al. 1997b).
