Polymer 3.87 has been evaluated as a matrix for the controlled release of progesterone.197 It was first shown that the rate of release of this steroid and of bovine serum albumen can be controlled by variations in the ratio of aryloxy to imidazolyl side groups atached to the polyphosphazene chain. In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to examine the release rate of labelled steroid from devices implanted subcutaneously in rats. Typical data are shown in Figure 3.22. The biocompatibility of this system, at least in rats, was found to be good. [Pg.129]

Immunoassay of Steroids.—Oestrone 3-methylphosphonothiolate, electrostatically complexed with methylated bovine serum albumen (BSA), is an effective immunogen for the production of an antiserum for oestrone 3-sulphate. The phosphorus-containing ester apparently mimics the size of the sulphate, but is more stable. Reductive amination, involving the coupling of 5a-androstane-3,17-dione and of 17/8-hydroxy-5a-androstan-3-one by reduction of their Schiff bases with NaBHsCN, resulted in coupling between the lysine residues of BSA and the C-3 position of the steroid, with up to 40 molecules of steroid per BSA molecule. These antigens led to effective antisera for the steroids. [Pg.211]

It was found (results not shown) that the addition of bovine serum albumen (BSA, 1 mg/mL) to the reaction significantly improved PCR yield. This is thought to be because BSA adsorbs to the glass preferentially and blocks adsorption of DNA and the polymerase on the capillary wall. [Pg.455]

A model rubber was made from cis-polyisoprene, a synthetic rubber which is chemically similar to natural rubber, to which had been added a small amount of hydrophilic impurity.
