Applications agricultural science

Veterinary Applications. Another use for antibiotics is for veterinary appHcations and for animal feed supplements to promote growth in Hvestock (see Feeds and feed additives). Feed antibiotics used in the United States far surpass all other agricultural appHcations in terms of kilogram quantities used and approach quantities used in human medicines (25). In 1980 the USA feed antibiotic usage was estimated to be between five and six million kg. The U.S. Council of Agricultural Science and Technology estimates that feed additives save the U.S. consumer approximately 3500 million per year in meat prices, and antibiotic use accounts for most of this. [Pg.476]

The applications of plasma emission spectrometry are very broad. The technique is used for clinical chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, geology, specialty and bulk chemical production, materials characterization of metal alloys, glasses, ceramics, polymers and composite materials, atmospheric science, forensic science, conservation and restoration of artworks by museums, agricultural science, food and nutrition science, industrial hygiene, and many other areas. The versatility of plasma emission spectrometry comes from its ability to determine a large number of elements rapidly in a wide variety of sample matrices. [Pg.503]

Isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ID-MS) is widely accepted as a quantification procedure of proven accuracy in elemental analysis and isotope ratio measurements [4]. Several areas of research in nuclear science, geochronology, medicinal chemistry, environmental science, and agricultural science have benefited from this technique. ID-MS is applicable to all elements that have at least two stable isotopes. Monoisotopic elements can be analyzed only if they have a long-lived natural or artificial radioisotope. For example, iodine and thorium have been determined with spikes of the long-lived isotopes 29i and 25 Th, respectively [44]. TI-MS and ICP-MS are the methods of choice for accurate ID-MS analysis. ICP-MS has the advantage that several elements can be analyzed simnltaneously under the same experimental conditions. Other ionization techniqnes discussed in this chapter have also been coupled with ID-MS. [Pg.280]
