Agglutinating value

In the agglutinating value test, the caking properties of the coal are progressively destroyed by the addition of sand of specified characteristics until the coal-sand mixture, on carbonization under controlled conditions, just fails to satisfy one or both of two conditions. 

The coefficient of viscosity for whole milk at 20°C, but not affected by cold agglutination of fat globules, is about 2.127 mPa s. Values for water and milk plasma at 20°C are 1.002 and 1.68 mPas, respectively. Casein, and to a lesser extent fat, are the principal contributors to the viscosity of milk whey proteins and low molecular mass species have less influence. 

Titer is the term used for the results of serological tests (degrees of dilution in agglutination tests), titers are first measurable a minimum of two weeks after the onset of illness, and often not until much later, approximately 30 days following onset. Values begin at 1 100. As the illness progresses, titers slowly increase to 1 400 or more. 

The ability for lectins to agglutinate some cell lines has suggested that insolubilized lectins may prove of value in certain specific cell separations. Edelman, Rutishauser and Millette [141], for example, showed that BALB mouse erythrocytes, thymocytes and lymphocytes bind to insolubilized Con A. While Zabriskie, Ollis and Berger found that wheat germ agglutinin insolubilized on polyacrylamide was able to bind mouse leukemia cells [142]. 

Screening for hepatocellular carcinoma has been attempted in high-incidence areas, such as Africa, China, Taiwan, Japan, and Alaska. Initial large-scale screening in China using less sensitive techniques (e.g., agglutination and immunodiffusion, which have cut-off values of 400 to 1000 pg/L) was able to detect notable numbers of new cases... 

Dipyridamole is a potent coronary vasodilator. Despite the fact that it causes a substantial increase in CBF, its value for the acute relief or prevention of angina pectoris has been seriously questioned. Considerable effort has been expended in the study of this drug. Deutllcke reports dipyridamole to inhibit adenosine deaminase which results in an accumulation of adenosine. Since adenosine is a potent vasodilator, there is an increase in CBF. Emmons found dipyridamole to inhibit platelet agglutination and proposed that dipyridamole prevents the uptake of adenosine by red blood cells, thereby delaying its deamination. Stafford feels that dipyridamole inhibition of adenosine deaminase is unlikely, as high concentrations are necessary to produce inhibition of deaminase from intestinal mucosa. Much lower concentrations of dipyridamole potentiate the action of adenosine on myocardial tissue. Stafford proposes that dipyridamole prevents the uptake of adenosine by myocardial tissue or red blood...
