CNS neurodegenerative disorders often accompany the impairment of memory and other cognitive functions. This impairment is probably due to selective neuronal death in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus, brain regions that are crucially involved in learning and memory. It has recently been found that the alcohol extract of pistils of C. sativus L. (CSE) affects learning and memory in mice. Oral administration of CSE (125 to 500 mg/kg) alone had no effect on learning behavior of mice in passive avoidance tests, but significantly improved ethanol-induced impairment of memory acquisition.

Kozma s review was a response to Clark (1983), who asserted that media do not influence learning under any conditions. .. Media are mere vehicles that deliver instruction but do not influence student achievement any more than the truck that delivers our groceries causes changes in our nutrition. According to Clark, the mode of presentation may affect the cost or extent of the distribution of education, but only the content of the vehicle can influence achievement (p. 445). Clark cited many reviews and studies that concluded that media do not affect learning and that many studies that compared media had been fruitless. 

PBDEs are estrogen disruptors and neurotoxins. They are believed to cause thyroid and neurodevelopmental effects. Short-term exposure to PBDEs interferes with thyroid function and disrupts hormonal balance. 18 Additive thyrotoxic effects were observed when PBDEs were administered to laboratory animals with PCBs or chlorinated hydrocarbons. 19 PBDE exposure has been linked to neurodevelopmental dysfunctions in children and young adults. 20 21 Administration of PBDE to 10-day-old laboratory animals resulted in impaired spontaneous motor behavior, affected learning and memory, and permanent behavioral effects. 21 ln vitro exposure of PBDE to human breast cancer cells demonstrated estrogenic potencies. 22 ...
