Aeration conditions

In de-aerated conditions, for instance in most central heating systems, little if any attack on copper occurs . As far as drinking waters are concerned, copper is not classified as a toxic substance or hazardous to health. To avoid any difficulties due to unpalatability, the maximum continuous copper content should not exceed 10 p.p.m., with a limit of 3 p.p.m. in water after standing overnight in copper pipes. A review of the subject by Grunau makes reference to 394 published papers. [Pg.701]

Copper-base alloys will corrode in aerated conditions. It is, therefore, sometimes appropriate to consider cathodic protection. It becomes particularly relevant when the flow rates are high or when the design of an item causes the copper to be an anode in a galvanic cell (e.g. a copper alloy tube plate in a titanium-tubed heat exchanger). Corrosion can be controlled by polarisation to approximately — 0-6V (vs. CU/CUSO4) and may be achieved using soft iron sacrificial anodes. [Pg.122]

Fruit juices, meat products, milk and milk products, fish and most vegetables, in which tin is likely to be anodic to steel, can be handled open to the air in tinned steel vessels. Some corrosion of the tin occurs at rates similar to those found for pure tin and in due course retinning may be necessary. The alloy layer in hot-dipped tin coatings is cathodic to both tin and steel and, under aerated conditions may stimulate the corrosion of both metals, but this effect appears to be unimportant in practice. [Pg.503]

There is only one choice for the antibiotic production process the synthesis of benzyl-penicillin (penicillin G, originally known as penicillin ). This, the most renowned antibiotic and the first one have been manufactured in bulk, is still universally prescribed.5 Although originally made by surface liquid culture, penicillin G is now produced by air-lift fermentation under aerated conditions. [Pg.265]

A number of thermoplastics undergo depolymerisation on heating. These include poly(styrene), poly(methyl methacrylate), and poly(oxymethylene). Such depolymerisation will occur regardless of the prevailing oxygen concentration and under well aerated conditions will provide a ready source of fuel for sustained combustion. [Pg.118]

The power input in stirred tanks can be calculated using the equation P = Ne pnM if the Newton number Ne, which at present still has to be determined by empirical means, is known. For stirred vessels with full reinforcement (bafQes, coils, see e.g. [20]), the only bioreactors of interest, this is a constant in the turbulent flow range Re = nd /v> 5000-10000, and in the non-aerated condition depends only on geometry (see e.g. [20]). In the aerated condition the Newton number is also influenced by the Froude number Fr = n d/g and the gas throughput number Q = q/nd (see e.g. [21-23]). [Pg.44]

Under aerated conditions at neutral to alkaline pH, inorganic iron is extremely insoluble (8), such that plants and microorganisms rely absolutely on iron uptake from organic matter complexes or iron that has been solubilized by siderophores and organic compounds contained in root exudate. Low-molecular-weight root exudates that dissolve iron include organic acids that are secreted by plant roots as a specific response to iron deficiency (9) or that are released constitutively at... [Pg.224]

Other systems, in which the sprouts are grown in a tank and submerged in water at intervals of several hours, are used often for commercial production of sprouts for food. Light and aeration conditions are not fully uniform in such systems, because inside the sprout mass less light is available. The use of light-inducible promoters clearly demands another kind of sprouting system. [Pg.47]

Downstream extraction. The culmre broth was diluted with ethyl acetate and the aqueous phase separated using a separation funnel. The organic layer was collected and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. Removal of the solvent by rotary evaporator gave (5)-7-methyl-2-oxepanone as a light yellow oil (6.5 g, 38 % yield). Chiral-phase GC showed 99 % ee and >97 % purity. EI-MS and NMR confirmed the product. Note the unconverted (R)-2-methyl cyclohexanone evaporated completely under the aeration conditions used during the overnight incubation. [Pg.349]

CPDMO is a new bioreagent for the synthesis of optically pure lactones with excellent enantioselectivity. CPDMO is not only effective in desymmetrization of meso and prochiral compounds (Procedure 2, Section 11.8.2), but excellent in carrying out the kinetic resolution of racemates (Procedure 3, Section 11.8.3). Additional examples of optically pure lactones that can be obtained are summarized in Table 11.4. In the fermenter work (Procedure 4, Section 11.8.4), (R)-2-methyl cyclohexanone was not converted, but evaporated under aeration condition (1 wm). This led to the expected product (5)-7-methyl oxepanone at the end of the experiment. The optically pure lactone could be recovered without sdica-gel chromatography separation. However, the production yield may be improved by using a better condenser. [Pg.349]

The Belusov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction is catalyzed by a different mechanism when low-reduction-potential couples such as [Fe(phen)3] +/[Fe(phen)3] + are employed. Experimental results for the BZ reaction with this couple in aerated conditions are compared with satisfactory agreement to a model calculation based on an 18-step skeleton mechanism, which includes reactions of organic radicals and molecular oxygen. [Pg.225]

The solid curve in Figure 6.19 displays the cyclic voltammetric response of a carbon-supported high surface area Pt nanoparticle electrocatalyst in perchloric acid electrolyte under de-aerated conditions. The hydrogen adsorption range between... [Pg.430]

Photocatalytic activity of HyCOM Ti02 for complete decomposition (mineralization) of organic compounds under aerated conditions was examined. Acetic acid was chosen as the model compound and the amount of evolved carbon dioxide was analyzed. [Pg.26]

In this system, the rate of C02 formation by HyCOM Ti02 is approximately three times larger than those of P-25 and ST-01 (Ishihara),51) clearly indicating that HyCOM Ti02 exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity under aerated conditions as well as under deaerated conditions. Moreover, TD and THyCA Ti02 s were... [Pg.26]

A careful heat treatment under aerated condition has been performed for Hombikat UV100 Ti02 powder (Sachtleben Chemie, GmbH). The crystal structure of the powder remains anatase below 800°C. For ESR measurements, Ti02 powder sealed under vacuum in a sample tube was irradiated with a 500 W mercury lamp through a band-pass glass filter. In order to examine the reactivity of the samples, 1 atm of air, 45 Torr of 2-propanol vapor, or 20 Torr of water vapor was introduced into the sample tubes. [Pg.46]

When P/V is used as the constant criterion, there is a decrease in power consumption under aerated conditions. In the literature many relationships exist, but in practice the gassed power consumption is about 50% of the ungassed power consumption. The correlations for gassed power consumption (P ) and the ungassed power consumption (Ps) can be expressed by [22]... [Pg.894]

In general, inhibited DMS fluid is best used below 600°F. and under good aeration conditions inhibited MPS fluids (> 0.05) are favored where temperatures rise above 600°F. and when conditions of poor aeration prevail. [Pg.123]
