During the years I knew him, he was a very busy man. His administrative responsibilities were substantial, not only as Head of the Physics Department but also as an Associate Director of Research with broader concerns. He served the National Research Council as an active member of its Committee on Catalysis and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics as a prominent member of its subcommittee on Lubrication, Friction and Wear. Those were heavy responsibilities during the years of World War II. He was a member of the Advisory Council of the American Institute of Physics and was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Physics. He was active also on the Advisory Committee of the American Petroleum Institute s Research Project 44, which was a very active one during the war. Needless to say, he travelled a lot. In his spare time he led an active personal life. He lived on a small ranch in the countryside to the east of San Francisco Bay there he bred and rode horses he was also a skier and had a lively interest in photography and other visual arts. His wife was an accomplished sculptress and they had many friends in the world of the arts. [Pg.155]

The authors are indebted to the American Petroleum Institute and to the API Technical Advisory Committee on Corrosion Fatigue for financial support and technical interaction, respectively, over the past seven years. Both of these have been quite necessary for establishing an atmosphere within which the ideas and concepts expressed could be conceived and developed. [Pg.195]

Sloan chairs both the Federal Methane Hydrate Advisory Committee and the CODATA International Hydrate Database Task Group. He has over 150 refereed hydrates publications, including a second book, Hydrate Engineering published by the Society of Petroleum Engineers in 2000. Sloan was named the Donald M. Katz Research Awardee by the Gas Processors Association in 2000 and has been an SPE Distinguished Lecturer on hydrates. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. [Pg.757]

Good is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, a past president of the American Chemical Society, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the American Institute of Chemists and the Royal Society of Chemistry. She has been active on the boards of directors of such groups as the Industrial Research Institute, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, and the National Institute for Petroleum and Energy Research. She has also served on advisory panels for the National Research Council, the National Bureau of Standards, the National Science Foundation Chemistry Section, the National Institutes of Health, and NASA, and on the executive committee for the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. [Pg.123]
