Advanced oxidation process fundamentals

The viable variant of an AOP depends on the chemical properties of the effluent and the scale of operation. Although, AOP has found wide environmental applications, extensive research is still devoted to the development of large-scale processes and process optimization. In this chapter, fundamentals, design and operations, and economics of different advanced oxidation processes will be presented. In addition, new research development in this area will also be presented. [Pg.464]

Nitric acid is one of the three major acids of the modem chemical industiy and has been known as a corrosive solvent for metals since alchemical times in the thirteenth centuiy. " " It is now invariably made by the catalytic oxidation of ammonia under conditions which promote the formation of NO rather than the thermodynamically more favoured products N2 or N2O (p. 423). The NO is then further oxidized to NO2 and the gases absorbed in water to yield a concentrated aqueous solution of the acid. The vast scale of production requires the optimization of all the reaction conditions and present-day operations are based on the intricate interaction of fundamental thermodynamics, modem catalyst technology, advanced reactor design, and chemical engineering aspects of process control (see Panel). Production in the USA alone now exceeds 7 million tonnes annually, of which the greater part is used to produce nitrates for fertilizers, explosives and other purposes (see Panel). [Pg.465]

New developments are hydroxylamines and lactones (for processing stability), which operate at an earlier stage during stabilisation. Lactone (benzofuranone) chemistry has been identified as commercially viable, and marks a revolutionary advance in comparison to hindered phenols and phosphites [18]. New lactone chemistry (Figure 10.1) provides enhanced additive compatibility, reduced taste and odour (organoleptics), resistance to irradiation-induced oxidation, and inhibition of gas fade discoloration. The commercial introduction of fundamentally new types of stabilisers for commodity and engineering polymers is not expected in the near future. [Pg.719]

The use of CeOs-based materials in catalysis has attracted considerable attention in recent years, particularly in applications like environmental catalysis, where ceria has shown great potential. This book critically reviews the most recent advances in the field, with the focus on both fundamental and applied issues. The first few chapters cover structural and chemical properties of ceria and related materials, i.e. phase stability, reduction behaviour, synthesis, interaction with probe molecules (CO. O2, NO), and metal-support interaction — all presented from the viewpoint of catalytic applications. The use of computational techniques and ceria surfaces and films for model catalytic studies are also reviewed. The second part of the book provides a critical evaluation of the role of ceria in the most important catalytic processes three-way catalysis, catalytic wet oxidation and fluid catalytic cracking. Other topics include oxidation-combustion catalysts, electrocatalysis and the use of cerium catalysts/additives in diesel soot abatement technology. [Pg.423]
