Adsorption. Many studies have been made of the adsorption of soaps and synthetic surfactants on fibers in an attempt to relate detergency behavior to adsorption effects. Relatively fewer studies have been made of the adsorption of surfactants by soils (57). Plots of the adsorption of sodium soaps by a series of carbon blacks and charcoals show that the fatty acid and the alkaU are adsorbed independently, within limits, although the presence of excess aLkaU reduces the sorption of total fatty acids (58). No straightforward relationship was noted between detergency and adsorption. [Pg.532]

The influence of the presence of alcohols on the CMC is also well known. In 1943 Miles and Shedlovsky [117] studied the effect of dodecanol on the surface tension of solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate detecting a significant decrease of the surface tension and a displacement of the CMC toward lower surfactant concentrations. Schwuger studied the influence of different alcohols, such as hexanol, octanol, and decanol, on the surface tension of sodium hexa-decyl sulfate [118]. One of the interests in confined polymers arises from adsorption behavior— that is, the intake or partitioning of polymers into porous media. Simulation of confined polymers in equilibrium with a bulk fluid requires simulations where the chemical potentials of the bulk and confined polymers are equal. This is a difficult task because simulations of polymers at constant chemical potential require the insertion of molecules into the fluid, which has poor statistics for long chains. Several methods for simulating polymers at constant chemical potential have been proposed. These include biased insertion methods [61,62], novel simulation ensembles [63,64], and simulations where the pore is physically connected to a large bulk reservoir [42]. Although these methods are promising, so far they have not been implemented in an extensive study of the partitioning of polymers into porous media. Propylene oxide is a surface active monomer structurally similar to ethylene oxide and therefore of interest as a SHM W-SP, but with more than ten repeating units this polymer is not water soluble. A compositional isomer methyl vinyl ether is water soluble the adsorption behavior of this polymer (PMVE) is illustrated in Figure 4. At 1 ppm the rate of 7T increase is linear over three hours. Adsorption behavior and the effect on colloid stability of water soluble polymers with a lower critical solution temperature(LCST) have been studied using polystyrene latices plus hydroxy propyl cellulose(HPC). Saturated adsorption(As) of HPC depended significantly on the adsorption temperature and the As obtained at the LCST was 1.5 times as large as the value at room temperature. The high As value obtained at the LCST remained for a long time at room temperature, and the dense adsorption layer formed on the latex particles showed strong protective action against salt and temperature. Furthermore, the dense adsorption layer of HPC on silica particles was very effective in the encapsulation process with polystyrene via emulsion polymerization in which the HPC-coated silica particles were used as seed. [Pg.131]

In this study, adsorption behavior of water soluble polymers and their effect on colloid stability have been studied using polystyrene latices plus cellulose derivatives. As conclusion, bifunctional fibers having both phosphonic acid and sulfonic acid groups exhibit the characteristic metal ion selectivity and high breakthrough capacities in addition to the extremely fast adsorption rates.
