Adjustable seals

Fit a three necked 250 ml. flask with a central rubber-sleeved or mercury-sealed stirrer, c/. Fig. 23(c), p. 45, where only two necks are shown, and with a thermometer the bulb of which reaches as near the bottom of the flask as the stirrer allows the third neck will carry at first a dropping-funnel and later a reflux condenser. Place 20 g. (19-5 ml.) of ethyl acetoacetate and 45 ml. of glacial acetic acid in the flask and by ice-water cooling adjust the temperature of the stirred mixture to 5 -7° maintain this temperature whilst adding a solution of 5 4 g. of sodium nitrite in 8 ml. of water slowly from the dropping-funnel during 15 minutes. Continue the stirring for 20-30 minutes, and then... [Pg.293]

The range of aeeuraey of this separation ean be understood by eonsidering the differenees in time seales that relate to eleetronie motions and nuelear motions under ordinary eireumstanees. In most atoms and moleeules, the eleetrons orbit the nuelei at speeds mueh in exeess of even the fastest nuelear motions (the vibrations). As a result, the eleetrons ean adjust quiekly to the slow motions of the nuelei. This means it should be possible to develop a model in whieh the eleetrons follow smoothly as the nuelei vibrate and rotate. [Pg.65]

In a typical experiment 105 mg (0.50 mmol) of 3.8c, dissolved in a minimal amount of ethanol, and 100 mg (1.50 mmol) of 3.9 were added to a solution of 1.21g (5 mmol) of Cu(N03)2 BH20 and 5 mmol of ligand in 500 ml of water in a 500 ml flask. -Amino-acid containing solutions required addition of one equivalent of sodium hydroxide. When necessary, the pH was adjusted to a value of 5 ( -amino acids) and 7.5 (amines). The flask was sealed carefully and the solution was stirred for 2A hours, followed by extraction with ether. After drying over sodium sulfate the ether was evaporated. Tire endo-exo ratios were determined from the H-NMR spectra of the product mixtures as described in Chapter 2. [Pg.103]

In a typical procedure, a solution of 0.175 mmol of L- -amino acid and 0.175 mmol of NaOH in 1 ml of water was added to a solution of 0.100 mmol of Cu(N03)2in 100 ml of water in a 100 ml flask. Tire pH was adjusted to 6.0-6.5. The catalyst solution was cooled to 0 C and a solution of 1.0 mmol of 3.8c in a minimal amount of ethanol was added, together with 2.4 mmol of 3.9. The flask was sealed carefully. After 48 hours of stirring at 0 C the reaction mixture was extracted with ether, affording 3.10c in quantitative yield After evaporation of the ether from the water layer (rotary evaporator) the catalyst solution can be reused without a significant decrease in enantioselectivity. [Pg.103]

Other forms of carbon-carbon composites have been or are being developed for space shutde leading edges, nuclear fuel containers for sateUites, aircraft engine adjustable exhaust nozzles, and the main stmcture for the proposed National Aerospace plane (34). For reusable appHcations, a siHcon carbide [409-21 -2] based coating is added to retard oxidation (35,36), with a boron [7440-42-8] h Lsed sublayer to seal any cracks that may form in the coating. [Pg.5]

Positive-displacement meters are normally rated for a limited temperature range. Meters can be constmcted for high or low temperature use by adjusting the design clearance to allow for differences in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the parts. Owing to small operating clearances, filters are commonly installed before these meters to minimize seal wear and resulting loss of accuracy. [Pg.58]

For skin packaging, ionomer films provide outstanding protection, especially for sharp objects. Films can be drawn down tightly around regular shapes without penetration. Characteristics of heat seals can be adjusted so that convenient peelable seals are obtained (31—35). [Pg.408]

In practice, triple alloy is added to a clay graphite cmcible in a refractory-lined vacuum-tight chamber (Fig. 14). Power input is controlled by adjusting the appHed voltage until the charge is melted. A refractory cover is placed over the cmcible and sealed with sand. The furnace cover contains an opening which mates with a port connecting to a condenser. [Pg.46]

Packiug may not provide a completely leak-free seal. With shaft surface speeds less than approximately 2.5 m/s (500 ft/min), the packiug may be adjusted to seal completely. However, for higher speeds some leakage is required for lubrication, friction reduction, and cooling. [Pg.939]

The chief advantage of packing over other types of seals is the ease with which it can be adjusted or replaced. Most equipment is designed so that disassembly of major components is not required to... [Pg.940]

Similarly, at lower currents, the volume of arc plasma is loo small I ) and so is the clogging effect. The pressure and volume of the quenching gas can be adjusted to interrupt the current now also at current zero. All these adjustments are pre-set and sealed by the manu-facturer. [Pg.641]

This type of seal has the rotary component and face mounted outside the seal chamber. The springs and drive elements are outside the pumped liquid. This reduces the problems associated with corrosion and the accumulation of pumped product clogging the springs. This seal is popular in the food processing industry. The pumped liquid arrives to the inside diameter of the faces and seals toward the outside diameter. The environment outside the pump approaches the OD of the face union. Pressures are limited to about 35 psig. Sometimes this. seal can be mounted either inside or outside the pump. This seal is easy to install, adjust, and maintain. It permits easy access and cleaning of the pump internal parts, often required in the food processing industry. [Pg.186]

Tail gas expander without or with adjustable inlet guide vanes (11) and guide vane setting motor (12), labyrinth shaft seals with air sealing... [Pg.94]

A simple, yet effeetive seal gas system eonsists primarily of a 5 p filter and a differential pressure regulator. The regulator senses the pressure behind the expander wheel and automatieally adjusts the seal gas pressure to the proper value. A single inlet eonneetion is generally provided for hook-up to the eustomer s seal gas supply. The seal gas must be dry, oil free, and within the temperature range. [Pg.276]

The reservoir relief valve should remain faetory-set and sealed it should not be adjusted to a testing only setting. [Pg.280]
