Adhesive Joining composite

Advanced adhesives are composite liquids that can be used, for example, to join aircraft parts, thus avoiding the use of some 30,000 rivets that are heavy, are labor-intensive to install, and pose quality-control problems. Adhesives research has not involved many chemical engineers, but the generic problems include surface science, polymer rheology and thermodynamics, and molecular modeling of materials... [Pg.82]

Epoxies, reinforced with fibers, are used for struetuial applications and they are also used as an adhesive for joining composite structures or attachment of metals. For these purposes epoxy usefulness is severely limited by its susceptibihty to water permeation and beeause epoxies lack toughness. Beeause of the eommeicial importance of epoxy, it is of interest to develop a greater understanding of the mechanisms involved in toughening (12). [Pg.495]

Evidence suggests that the failure behavior of thermoplastics is much the same as for thermoset composites. High joint efficiencies can be obtained with suitable consideration to the joint design, fastener type, and environmental factors. In addition to mechanical and adhesive joining, thermoplastic composites can also be heat welded depending on the concentration and type of fillers within the composite. [Pg.426]

Wooden airframes have historically been bonded, originally with glues such as casein or synthetic urea-formaldehyde systems, but today most aerospace structures are made from fibre composites (glass fibre and carbon fibre, predominantly) and metals (mostly aluminium but also titanium). Adhesives are well suited for joining composite materials since the need to drill holes through the composite can be avoided and, in some cases, the... [Pg.42]

From a conceptual point of view, welded connections seem to be the most suitable method to join composite materials, with potential economic and technical advantages. However, the use of this technique is restricted to FRP materials containing thermoplastic resins which, as previously discussed, are more limited technically than thermoset resins (in terms of fibre adhesion and impregnation, processing and mechanical properties). Therefore, this technique is not often used in civil engineering applications. [Pg.225]

Vertical and Horizontal Tail Planes These are typical structures again making use of film adhesives and conventional paste adhesives where composite structures are to be joined. This composite design structure is generic to most of the Airbus family. [Pg.323]

Polymers are characteri2ed as thermosetting and thermoplastic with respect to the methods by which they are joined. Thermosetting polymers are permanently hard and do not soften upon the apphcation of heat they are joined by mechanical fasteners and adhesives. Several methods have been devised to join thermoplastic polymers, as weU as thermoplastic composite materials, which soften upon heating. [Pg.344]

Concrete is a particulate composite of stone and sand, held together by an adhesive. The adhesive is usually a cement paste (used also as an adhesive to join bricks or stones), but asphalt or even polymers can be used to give special concretes. In this chapter we examine three cement pastes the primitive pozzolana the widespread Portland cement and the newer, and somewhat discredited, high-alumina cement. And we consider the properties of the principal cement-based composite, concrete. The chemistry will be unfamiliar, but it is not difficult. The properties are exactly those expected of a ceramic containing a high density of flaws. [Pg.207]

Simply bonding a stiffener to a panel with adhesive is certainly a very feasible and natural procedure with typical composite structure construction. We have not discussed any procedure for joining parts except co-curing. Alternatively, to use film adhesive for bonding parts together, we simply cut a sheet or film of adhesive to the proper size, place it between the two parts that we wish to bond together, and then go through a cure cycle that causes the adhesive to adhere to both the stiffener and to the panel itself. We can also mechanically fasten any stiffener we like to a panel. [Pg.405]

Joining using adhesives does not present particular difficulties and is used to assemble thermoplastics with plastics, composites or metals. Joining avoids damaging the parts by drilling and allows an excellent distribution of the stresses. The parts can have structural functions if the adhesive is correctly chosen, and if care is taken to ... [Pg.764]

Epoxy-phenolic adhesives were developed primarily for bonding metal joints in high-temperature applications. Their first major application was to join major aircraft components. They are also commonly used for bonding glass, ceramics, and phenolic composites. Because of their relatively good flow properties, epoxy phenolics are also used for bonding honeycomb sandwich composites. [Pg.126]
