Adhesive test methods and their test results are related to but are not the same as other polymer property tests described in this handbook. In general, adhesive property tests are ultimate properties measured at the failure load of an adhesive joint. Adhesive joint properties are certainly related to adhesion (vide supra) but are primarily due to the physical properties of the adhesive and the physical properties of the adherends. In addition, the design of the adhesive joint has a major effect on the measured strength. Indeed, a properly designed adhesive joint will always lead to failure of the adherend. In addition, adhesive joint properties are as temperature- and rate-dependent as the properties of the polymers used to make the adhesive. Unfortunately, in many cases in the literature, the rate of test is not described. In this chapter, the type of adherend or backing will be described, if at all possible. [Pg.480]

A number of other specialized adhesion testing methods have been tried, but most apply only to a very limited class of materials. These other methods use many other techniques, such as surface indentation probes or acoustic or thermal shock of the coating to get an idea of the film adhesion. In addition to being applicable only to a small class of materials, all of these techniques are plagued by the lack of a direct relation to adhesive strength and limited use and experience with the technique. Reference 16 reviews a few of the more common methods of adhesion testing. [Pg.59]

Adhesion. Adhesion measurements provide a figure of merit for the degree of conductor bonding to the substrate. The various mechanisms for bonding to the substrate are composition-dependent and were discussed in Sec. 8.2.3 under Inorganic Binders. This property is one of the most difficult to measure in terms of reproducibility and correlation. This is a result of the many factors that affect adhesion test results. These include, but are not limited to, the following specific conductor formulation, substrate, test pattern, test preparation, wire attachment method, solder type, and adhesion test method. [Pg.582]
