Adhesion chains

During polymerisation (solidification of the adhesive) chains of adhesive molecules build up on the surfaces and interweave to bind the surfaces together, see Figure 10.2. [Pg.260]

Ruths M and Granick S 1998 Rate-dependent adhesion between opposed perfluoropoly (alkyl ether) layers dependence on chain-end functionality and chain length J. Rhys. Chem. B 102 6056-63... [Pg.1749]

Interaction of Solids With Flotation Reagents. For flotation to occur with the aid of reagents, such compounds must adsorb at the sohd—hquid interface unless the soHd to be floated is naturally hydrophobic. In this latter case only depression can be attempted by the use of additional ions or depressants that hinder bubble—particle adhesion. Frothers (typically long-chain alcohols) and/or modifying agents such as hydrocarbon oils can, however, be used to enhance the collection of naturally hydrophobic soflds such as M0S2, talc, or plastics. [Pg.48]

Although most aromatic modified C-5 resins are typically higher softening point resins, certain appHcations, such as adhesives, require lower softening points. Copolymerization of a C-8—C-10 vinyl aromatic fraction with piperylenes in the presence of a C-4—C-8 mono-olefin chain-transfer stream yields resins with softening points ranging from 0—40°C (44). A particular advantage of these Hquid resins is the fact that they eliminate the need for plasticizers or oils in some pressure sensitive adhesive appHcations. [Pg.354]

Butyl mbber, a copolymer of isobutjiene with 0.5—2.5% isoprene to make vulcanization possible, is the most important commercial polymer made by cationic polymerization (see Elastomers, synthetic-butyl rubber). The polymerization is initiated by water in conjunction with AlCl and carried out at low temperature (—90 to —100° C) to prevent chain transfer that limits the molecular weight (1). Another important commercial appHcation of cationic polymerization is the manufacture of polybutenes, low molecular weight copolymers of isobutylene and a smaller amount of other butenes (1) used in adhesives, sealants, lubricants, viscosity improvers, etc. [Pg.244]

OC-Methylstyrene. This compound is not a styrenic monomer in the strict sense. The methyl substitution on the side chain, rather than the aromatic ring, moderates its reactivity in polymerization. It is used as a specialty monomer in ABS resins, coatings, polyester resins, and hot-melt adhesives. As a copolymer in ABS and polystyrene, it increases the heat-distortion resistance of the product. In coatings and resins, it moderates reaction rates and improves clarity. Physical properties of a-methylstyrene [98-83-9] are shown in Table 12. [Pg.490]

Water-borne adhesives are preferred because of restrictions on the use of solvents. Low viscosity prepolymers are emulsified in water, followed by chain extension with water-soluble glycols or diamines. As cross-linker PMDI can be used, which has a shelf life of 5 to 6 h in water. Water-borne polyurethane coatings are used for vacuum forming of PVC sheeting to ABS shells in automotive interior door panels, for the lamination of ABS/PVC film to treated polypropylene foam for use in automotive instmment panels, as metal primers for steering wheels, in flexible packaging lamination, as shoe sole adhesive, and as tie coats for polyurethane-coated fabrics. PMDI is also used as a binder for reconstituted wood products and as a foundry core binder. [Pg.350]

Although the main uses for benzoic acid are as a chemical raw material, it also has numerous direct uses. Benzoic acid is used in substantial quantities to improve the properties of various alkyd resin coating formulations, where it tends to improve gloss, adhesion, hardness, and chemical resistance. Benzoic acid terminates chain propagation in alkyd resins (qv) and promotes crystallinity in the final product. [Pg.55]
